Shades State Park is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Indiana, and it offers a truly immersive natural experience for those seeking adventure and tranquility. I recently had the pleasure of spending a weekend at this park, and I can wholeheartedly say that it exceeded my expectations in every way.
One of the standout features of Shades State Park is its diverse trail system, which caters to hikers of all skill levels. During my visit, I explored several trails, covering approximately 5 miles in total. The park offers a variety of terrains, from rugged and challenging trails like Trail 5 with its dramatic sandstone ravines and ladders to more leisurely strolls along Trail 2, which winds alongside Sugar Creek, offering picturesque views of the water and lush foliage.
The highlight of my trip was undoubtedly the awe-inspiring rock formations that dot the landscape. The towering sandstone cliffs and deep, moss-covered canyons create a sense of wonder and make for excellent photo opportunities. I couldn't resist pausing to take in the beauty of Silver Cascade Falls, a serene waterfall tucked away in a remote corner of the park.
For those interested in camping, Shades State Park offers a range of camping options, from primitive campsites to modern campgrounds with amenities. The campgrounds are well-maintained, and the park staff is friendly and helpful, making for a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
Wildlife enthusiasts will also find much to appreciate at Shades State Park. I spotted various bird species and small mammals during my hikes, and the park's rich biodiversity adds to the overall charm of the place.
One important tip: Remember to pack appropriately for your visit. Sturdy hiking boots, water, snacks, and a trail map are essential. The trails can be quite challenging, so be prepared for some elevation changes and rocky terrain.

The last time I was a Turkey Run SP, I was deeply saddened by how it has been DESTROYED by HORRIBLE HORRIBLE people! I don't think every person hiking there is bad, but the shere VOLUME of people through that park have killed so much flora. Shades offers similar terrain, but has not seen the crowds and so the creek beds and canyons and forests have not been destroyed by people who won't stay on a path, can't resist climbing where they shouldn't, or feel the need to graffiti EVERYTHING.
As for the campground & facilities...they are sanitary. I would not call anything well-kept. But, it's a fully non-electric campground, so not as much budget- that's understandable. Showers at the bathhouse in APRIL 2024 were fridged!! We told the maintenance men who were working on another issue there. They said the water heater was on, but they'd check the temp. That evening, there had been no change to water temp. The campsites are very small as a result of being overgrown in brambles and other flora. Bugs were already pretty bad. The campground playground was very weedy. There were no benches at all. It was hidden down a short gavel lane and a hiking trail ran right along side it. It was not a playground I felt comfortable sending my kids to alone.
Around the park, we could see lots of cleaning, clearing, and grounds management being done. I hope this means the park has been given some funds for catching up on grounds maintenance.
Aside from the maintenance folks in the campground, we also interacted with one other staffer at the gate. She made it plain she was there ONLY to collect a paycheck.
When there was a disturbance in the campground (noise and dangerous driving after dark) a white DNR truck was there within 10 mins. The whopping and hollering ceased immediately and three cars full of people left...
