Definitely a challenging hike for a beginner. I was not sure what I was getting into, but the experience was well worth it!
This trail definitely puts emphasis on the "Valley" of Jordan Valley Pathway, as the hills are up and down constantly.
Start yourself off at 1 and go to 2. Then ask yourself: will I be okay with doing this for the next 4+ hours? I suggest you should, since you might just surprise yourself, but as a beginner, it is doable but you may want to consider something easier.
Start off early so as to camp overnight at the Pinney Bridge State Forest Campground if doing the full 18 mile loop. There is no camping premesis on sight at the overlook. You want to start by noon at the latest in order to reach the campground before it is dark.
Please note that the trek from 6 to 7 is quite incredible. The difference between a 2 mile trek and a four mile trek is quite amazing, and the hile from 6 to 7 is 4 miles, with plenty of ups and downs.
While you are hoofing it, steady your nerves, and focus on your breathing and your foot placement, as there are many points where erosion makes for difficult inclines and steep declines.
Many of the trail markers on the shore (north) side of the trail were knocked down or in disrepair, which is the reason for the 4 star. Otherwise the trail is quite the experience (though difficult) while being accessible enough...

This has become one of our favorite Sunday morning walks with the kids, and it’s a trail we keep coming back to. The loop offers a great mix of scenery without being too physically demanding, which makes it a good option for families or anyone looking for a lighter hike that still feels rewarding.
We recommend hiking the loop counter-clockwise. By heading north out of the parking lot instead of west, you’ll start with the big descent down to the NCT intersection. It’s a smoother way to experience the trail and saves you from having to tackle that downhill at the end of your walk.
The views of the Jordan Valley are what really make this hike special. On clear days, you can see across the valley and take in some truly beautiful landscapes. It’s a reminder of just how much natural beauty is tucked into Northern Michigan.
As of now, there are still some downed trees from the ice storm, but nothing that makes the trail impassable. Most people should have no issue navigating around them. All in all, this is a lovely, accessible hike that we would highly recommend.

Read moreMy wife and I are not experienced hikers. I had driven past the sign for Deadman's Hill Overlook a few times over the years and today curiosity got the best of us. A perfect day for a hike in the woods (mid 60's and overcast) was in store. Without a lot of research we parked and found our way to the trail head where we chose the nearly 4 mile "blue trail". The first mile seemed to be straight downhill and we were joking that what goes down, must come up. But the last 3 miles were a mixture of moderate hills interlaced with well placed plateaus, some narrow washouts made passable by some well placed board walks, and a beautiful few of the forest, the valley and several "bubbling brooks". Not a piece of trash in site! There were times we were convinced we had taken a wrong turn, but following the "blue" marks on trees lining the trail proved to be the way back to our car. Great day and a...
