The scenery is pretty, but don’t bother getting a paid campsite here. We had to hike over half a mile to our site, with no car access, which was not disclosed on Reserve America. You have to hike even more to get to the outhouse which isn’t even reserved for campers, it’s open to the public and anyone who goes to hike there. Couldn’t even enjoy the campsite during the day and had to leave almost immediately because there’s no fountain to get water and the campground is invested with fire ants and huge hornets. Firewood is added to the expense of the campsite whether you use it or not, which we did not use, and they don’t offer refunds. For $55 dollars I would’ve just gotten a motel instead of a tent camp site that basically offers nothing besides wood. Come here to hike, and support the preserve in other ways, but do not pay...
Read moreSteep Rock Preserve in Washington, CT, made for the perfect autumn hike! The fall colors were stunning as we followed the Yellow Trail to the Blue Square, which led us through the historic tunnel and across a scenic bridge, before winding back along the Green Trail around the mountain. The Preserve’s landscape is truly varied, with riverside views, rocky outcrops, and woodsy paths, making it a rewarding experience for both novice and seasoned hikers.
Adding to the Halloween vibe, I couldn’t resist channeling my inner witch while trekking through the winding paths. The place felt like a hidden forest world, just right for getting into the spooky spirit!
Highly recommend Steep Rock for anyone looking to soak up New England’s seasonal beauty and enjoy an immersive, nature-filled...
Read moreThis is a very large preserve with a number of different hiking trails. Our targets today were the stone tunnel and then the holiday house ruins. It was pretty buggy and the humidity was high but most of the walk is shaded. You can drive nearly all the way to the stone tunnel leaving only a very short walk to the tunnel which does have a sign. The road is hard packed gravel and narrow (one lane only) but its in decent shape, just take your time...and be mindful of walkers. Parking space for 3cars close to the tunnel. Tunnel is very cool. The holiday house ruins have a ton of poison ivy so tread carefully! Ample designated parking in this spot. Great dog friendly area. You will pass a suspension bridge as you...
