I wanted SO badly to write a great review for this place. We could tell it's under formation and has undergone great improvement. Our campsite was great, despite tons of ants, and the trails are wonderous!
I wrote the following email to the manager, after speaking with the employee at the front desk. I did not get a response back from either, which is the reason for my low review. We understand things happen, but it is not ok to not respond to client inquiry or find a way to make it better.
"Hello,
We booked 3 nights here and so far I’ve been extremely disappointed except for the trails. When we arrived, we received no guidance on the park or where to go for our spot. We told the employee we have never been here and asked if there was anything we needed to know. She said she didn’t think so, so we asked for a map at least.
We paid to go swimming the first night to be kicked out 30 minutes later for a private party, and were told to come back for free. You can imagine how this went over with our kids ages 2 & 5. We decided to do our pool day on Monday and came to the pool to find it closed. There is no where that specifies that the camp social or pool are closed on Mondays, including the website. In fact, the website will let me purchase tickets to the pool right now. This is our last day and we saved swimming for today, and like I said—we are extremely upset and disappointed. We also wanted snow cones and walking tacos that we saved for today and now find out we can’t get it. The splash pad in town is less than desirable as 1.5 sculptures work. (Side note: we got our kids all ready and showed up at the pool. There were several other campers in their swimsuits trying to figure out what was going on as well).
I sincerely hope to be compensated for this huge inconvenience and disappointment for both us parents, but mostly our kids. You really market the swimming pool, and 1/3 days of our stay it’s closed, without notice, for us to make...
Read moreWe used to truly loved this park and it was always on our hiking and camping list multiple times a year, but since the new management took over we wont be going back and making sure to tell everyone we once recommended it too that its not worth it. My fiancé and i wanted to have our wedding here and set up a private tour with the owner whos wife was supposed to join but last minute was told it would be his teenage daughter coming instead, weird but okay we went along anyways. We showed them exactly where we wanted it all to take place as well as what sites we wanted to book and the glamping. We were told they had it all down and would reach back out with a quote and "Whatever we wanted they would make work!"...well cut to several weeks later i had to reach out and the only person to contact me was the teenage daughter who had NONE of the information i needed. At this point after our tour i had already taken family out to see the location and still never got a response from anyone in management and when i reached out again all i got was 'Oh sorry we aren't equipped to handle weddings" and nothing more. They could have told us when we went to to the property and spoke to the owner. Then a month later they are posting the pictures of the EXACT site we requested talking about all the renovations they have done for WEDDINGS....who does that? They seemed like nice people when we did the tour but they truly mishandled the situation and never once apologized. In fact i wrote a review on FB and they quickly deleted it and BLOCKED me from on fb. I think the way they handled the situation was absolutely terrible when they had already spoken to us and told us we could do it there and to let them handle the rest. They didn't handle anything! They just deleted the complaints and never acknowledged that they did anything wrong. They will probably delete this too. We wont be back nor any of our...
Read moreI read some great reviews of this "park" (read: campground) and was left wanting. This place is very small, and very commercialized. There's a public pool complete with a water slide and "snack shack" in the middle of it. State Park? Really? This is a scenic campground, people. The hiking is a joke. The campground is long and narrow and the road bisects the entire park so there is no hiking out of earshot from vehicles. These "nature walks" consist of a a few dusty, out-and-back trails that regularly run along side barbed wire fences that most of the time peter out in brush. Expect to see plenty of littering as well, including spools of barbed wire (and loose wire on the ground) from the private land owners nearby. The entire place boasts an astounding 4 miles of trails. Fail. The camping is adequate. I visited in late October 2010 and none of the restrooms were unlocked. There are a couple nice spots, and some even have water spigots. But most of the sites are cramped and have strict rules: no pets off leashes and no alcoholic beverages. The "lake," as one reviewer claimed, is a stagnant pond. Swim at your own risk! Not everything about this place is bad, though. One positive aspect of Red Rock Canyon is the climbing opportunities. There are multiple small cliffs designated for climbing and rappelling. And the drive through the campground is scenic, especially compared to the suicide-inducing monotony of the surrounding Oklahoma flatlands. Expect a few photo ops from the road, but nothing worth taking a camera for on the hikes. Overall, it's a nice place to camp, and a diamond in the rough as far as beginner climbing goes, but don't buy the hype: This place is not as good as the reviews make...
