Nice area, at the river boat ramp with lots of parking (except when it's Rockfish season). There is also a distillery just outside the gate that's looks like it could be pretty cool. We were there on a Sunday and it was closed
The hike/bike trail starts from the parking area. But note, it heads away from the river toward town. The sign for the trail head by the river appears to suggest the trail is behind the sign headed toward the river. This is not the trail. This is simply access to riverside fishing spots.
The trail exits the parking area on the pavement with a tunnel under the road. From there it goes through town (follow the fish on the sidewalk) and eventually drops you by the old mill. If you look up and to the right from the trail you can see an old water tower that is right above the mill.
The old mill is now a huge antique mall that is fun to browse. They have everything from microwave ovens to building supplies to clothing to shoes to antiques. It is big enough to take an hour or more just to walk through. Everything seemed to be on sale and there were some pretty good prices on some things. There is a separate building off to the site that has building supplies and other odds and ends.
From there the path goes on to the original tow path along the canal. You will pass multiple old buildings, a confederate cemetery and an aquaduct where the barges were towed over a stream below. The stream was rolling rapids when we were there, but we had had a day of rain prior.
This section of the trail is very shaded and still has water in some parts of the canal, so bring insect repellent.
There is parking outside the fence surrounding a water treatment plant just past the aquaduct. If you prefer, you can start your hike from there. This parking lot is about 2 miles from the river trail head and was our turn around point on this day. We plan to go back and hike from the aquaduct on into the city and I will post a review part...
Read moreBeautiful scenery, historic park. Great place to take the kids. Boating, fishing, playgrounds, and hiking. A nice walk for the dogs. Absolutely gorgeous. Just a few minutes off I-95. Worth the minor detour or family-friendly day trip to the rockfish capital of the world. On this day, the rapids were incredible yet peaceful to watch and take in the serenity. The rapids can sometimes disappear if higher volumes of water are being released from the nearby reservoir; but today, they were out.
The playground was nice and clean; shaded play area near the restrooms. The restrooms were clean and conveniently located.
There was so much to experience in one day so we are planning to come back to hike on the site of the...
Read moreThis as an entry point was not good. (Very end) We didn’t make it far before the trail was so overgrown we couldn’t go any further. We drove up a few miles because I wanted to see the aqueduct. That trail appeared to be closed because there was a lock on it and the water treatment plant was under construction. We decided to walk the trail north past the lake. Very anticlimactic walk. Lots of chain link fence and the smell was awful. Turned back to leave when one of the contractors told us we could walk the trail to the aqueduct and it was about a 1000 feet south. It was beautiful. I gave it two stars because they were just so many not so nice points...
