UPDATE/WARNING: Very large speed bump at entrance to campsites! I have a Class B van and did not clear the bump on the way out. $3,000 repair to my generator!!
CAMPGROUND REVIEW: Reserved and paid for one night the day before. Arrived at 5pm and office was closed. Small campground had 2 occupied sites and name tags on 2 other sites but my name was not there. I chose a site and parked my van. 2 houses later a ranger arrived and wanted to see my reservation, which I showed her on my phone.
Upon leaving, I drove slowly over the same speed bump that I cleared on the way in but this time it scraped my generator located under the floor of my van. No warning signs for speed bump but I had seen it on the way in and was very careful. The bump is much too large and damaged my generator.
This campground has outhouses and no other facilities. Beautiful woods, quiet, but bring your bug spray and watch that speed bump on the way out!
UPDATE: Initially I thought it was the water tank that got scraped but it was the generator. I was also told there was fuel leaking and I guess I am glad to still be here to write about it.
The campground needs to either level out that bump (it is much higher on the exit side) or put up some sort of warning sign that some vehicles won't be able to clear that height. I have never had a problem anywhere else and I have driven it 5,000 miles since I got it...
Read moreI've been here a handful of times, and generally find that most of the walk will be on a road, not trail. The one thing I wish was available was a sign saying when a trail ends at a certain mile point, instead of having to find out the hard way. If you're a regular, you know that there's a road you can walk down called Lyons Head Drive, which takes you along the Brandywine creek. If you take that down onto the main road (Wagontown Rd.) And loop around to the other side of the creek, you can walk alongside the creek from across the path you were just on. If you walk all the way down that trail, theoretically based off google maps, you should be able to make your way to Cedar knoll rd and then back into the park for a nice long walk. Turns out you CAN'T make it all the way through using that trail. It legit just stops RIGHT as you are nearing the main road to get our before you come across someone's backyard and bunch of trees blocking the path....With all the sleet on the trail, making your way back will be a pain, but there's a way to get out onto Hibernia road if you backtrack a bit and make a left. Finding out the hard way made a nice walk into an unexpected 5mi...
Read moreWe've lived in the Downingtown area almost four years (West Chester before that) and passed by a number of times, saying to ourselves that we have to visit. So we finally did and it didn't disappoint.
We only saw a small portion of the 900+ acres of the area where you can hike, take a walking tour in and around the historic iron workers (and later Philly lawyer's) 'mansion', kayak, or fish on the lakes and in the Brandywine Creek.
There's also a pavilion for some outdoor performances, vast grass fields, playground, and camping grounds. Some of the hiking trails (might as well be service roads) lead to great spots with handicapped parking and beautiful views of the lake.
The wooded areas are luscious and full of bird watching opportunities, or just connecting with nature and finding yourself and inner peace.
We had great luck witnessing a power play between three or four vultures that found a dead fish by the dam and one very brave crane (or heron?), which was hilariously interrupted by two geese that were just observing the whole thing from a safe distance before.
There's no way we won't be back. Looking...
