One of the more remote and beautiful state high points, Eagle Mountain still accessible by an easy hiking trail. Come about 12-15 miles from Grand Marais down a few dirt roads to get to the trailhead. The four-mile long trail cuts through forest, then through a bog, then around a beautiful lake (where you first see the summit), and then starts to climb a bit. The views are all before you get to the summit, but they are beautiful, and you will see the forest for miles. The summit itself only has a plaque and no register.
NOTE WELL: IF YOU COME BETWEEN MAY AND JULY, YOU WILL GET EATEN ALIVE! INSECTS WILL EVEN BITE THROUGH YOUR CLOTHING! NO AMOUNT OF DEET WILL HELP YOU AVOID THIS (though it may reduce the total number of bites you have)! I made the mistake of doing this peak in June twice. The second time, even with my clothes soaked with heavy-duty backwoods bug spray, mosquitoes and black flies still managed to bite through my sleeves repeatedly. When I got back to the car, the skeeters followed me into the car. There were approximately twenty skeeters swatted in the car that night, and more in the trunk where I put my gear (even with me opening the windows and letting them leave).
That said, this is a beautiful hike at any time of year, and worth the short drive from Grand Marais. Highly...
Read moreSuperior view! From the highest point of 2301’ in Minnesota on a clear day one can see it’s lowest that being Lake Superior at 600. This round trip, RT hike is said to be 7-8 miles. The rugged terrain calls for sturdy footwear as most is strewn with rocks. The first portion to the base of Eagle Mountain is an undulating trail through thick forest of birch fir and spruce. A beaver pond and beautiful lake too🌲🌲Once you get to the split in the trail the incline steepens dramatically then tappers off to a gentler slope. There are a few places where the stone still holds back the forest which gives us stunning views to the east. In the distance towards the north the coastal hills part to give one a view of the vast waters of the worlds largest freshwater lake. Pic included. On the top there are more open areas in the forest for more spectacular views. At this point the top is a few more steps into the woods where one finds a bronze plate marking its location. Trail is easy to follow will give you a...
Read moreThe highest point in Minnesota. The summit of Eagle Mountain. From the trailhead and back it took me 4 hours to hike the 6.8 miles. Rough terrain was alternating rocky, full of tree roots, or muddy. There were a few sketchy bridges over water crossing as well. But I enjoyed the hike. Use mosquito spray and take a can of it with you on the hike to reapply more. I took a little backpack with a couple of bottles of water, the mosquito spray and some energy bars. It...
