It is a pretty simple hike if you're used to unpaved trails. At times, they can be covered in foliage, tree roots and rocks but the trees have blue paint on them to stay on trail. Stunning views when you're high enough up to see rolling hills. We weren't able to get the compass needle to spin once we reached the rock but didn't play with it long enough due to being mauled by mosquitoes. They got really bad and my friend got welts from her bites. We were using some natural bug spray and it just isn't effective. Use DEET and enjoy yourself. Thank you to the random hiker guy who gave us some DEET as we made it in record time...

Great hike. Moderately difficult. Plenty of scenic views to take in along the way. Great payoff at the end. We hiked it on the winter. We moved at a fast pace and were able to do the hike out in 40 minutes, 30 minutes on the way back. Plan to spend some time at the rock itself.

The trail is beautiful, and the rock is an impressive sight, but it is not magnetic in any way I can tell. I saw someone hold a compass up to it and it didn't even affect that. I think the bigger attraction is the unique appearance and shapes of the rocks along this trail. They look metallic and rectangular, and many people appear to be building...

Short section of the border route trail, out and back from the gunflint trail is roughly 3.2 total miles. The trail itself is very typical for this area, lots of rocks and roots. There are a couple of overlooks along the way. Magnetic Rock is quite unique, bring a magnet and compass to check it out.
