As a former student, I’m sharing this in hopes that future students—especially those with undiagnosed or invisible disabilities—are treated more compassionately than I was.

I experienced repeated unprofessional interactions with a faculty member, Dr. Sarah Parrott, during my time at DMU. I made multiple good-faith efforts to seek help and clarification during a high-stress course sequence while unknowingly struggling with a medically diagnosed condition (obstructive sleep apnea). Instead of support, I was met with judgmental and discouraging comments that made me question my own abilities.

I have since withdrawn from the program for personal reasons, but the damage of that interaction stuck with me. I submitted formal documentation of my experience, including a sleep study, to multiple departments. I sincerely hope DMU takes this seriously and ensures students aren’t spoken to with sarcasm, assumptions, or discouragement when asking for help.

I was initially accepted, and attended for a year before deciding I wanted a better medical education. This program is very basic. It assumes the new student knows nothing. I felt most of my first year was a waste, therefore transferred to another med school. I will graduate from that school this May, and have a choice of residencies at very good schools. I don’t think I would have had this result if I had stayed. Save your money and wait for a good med school, or get another degree while waiting for a...

After three years of an ongoing issue with my now nine year old son, we were able to have hope again after working with Kari Smith in the physical therapy department at DMU. After seeing doctors, neurologists, and another physical therapist things weren't getting better. Now that we have found Kari, there is relief in sight! We will be forever...
