Very interesting natural area with a variety of landscapes, the blue loop trail around Wickaboxet offers a little bit of everything. The big draw in my opinion is Rattlesnake Ledge, or Wickaboxet Rock. It’s a big cliff just a few hundred feet off the trail. There is a path to the top, and the view is incredible (at least by Rhode Island standards). You can get there easily from the parking lot if you take a right at the trailhead, but for a real hike, I would start left and go clockwise around the blue loop to get the full Wickaboxet experience.
If you take the full route, you’ll see historic cemeteries, tall pines, a nice little lake, plenty of glacial boulders, and of course lots of classic New England stone walls. After all that, you would end your hike with Rattlesnake Ledge. It is more tiresome to walk up to the top after 5 miles of hiking, but this view is far superior to any I have seen on an inland RI trail. To me, that’s the right way to...
