Super cool trail with a secret in Peoria, IL. Find more in my book 50 Hikes With Kids Illinois, Indiana, Ohio #coalminer #union #hikingadventures #authorsoftiktok

The trails have been cleared and made over very well! There is still minimal marking posts and no trail map, but the paths are clear, wide, easy to follow, they have benches in a couple of spots, ropes in steep areas, and the scenery is beautiful! Even the unfortunate graffiti is unique, although I'd hate to see the whole area covered in it. Definitely recommend hiking here.

5-1-24 It's a steep start to this trail. Not for leisure hiking. We didn't make it all the way to the top because the trails were too slippery. With the leaves and mud mixed together, it made for a slippery go. We may try it again if the trails dry out through the summer.

Rocky Glen is beautiful! My husband & I thoroughly enjoyed hiking and reading about the history of the area! I was not, however, impressed with the trail map and how it correlated to the actual trail from the parking lot on Kickapoo Creek Road. The trail map at the parking lot & online would have you believe there is one trail in the shape of a T. This is not the case. There are multiple trails that veer off of what you believe to be the main trail! The trail markers are confusing and there are numerous non marked trails in addition to the main trail. My husband and I kept running into another couple who was equally baffled and could not find the main path to the coal mine or Rocky Glen. By luck & a guess we finally found the dry Rocky Glen which led us to the signs pointing the way. Anyway, I’m not sure my post is completely understandable , but I recommend you compare the GPS screenshot of our actual hike to the actual map at the parking lot & on the website (we started & returned to the Parking Lot on Kickapoo Creek Rd). It is a beautiful & confusing hike; however, I could always hear traffic, so I never felt like I was in any real danger. I would simply recommend an updated trail map w/ all the various...

One of the better places in the Peoria area to get into nature and take a walk in the woods! Rocky Glen features a number of trails, steep terrain (for central Illinois), nice views of the Glen, some rock features, and an abandoned coal mine and is a good place to take the family on a hike (including dogs). Our only minor complaint is that some of the trails lack signage although many of these seemed to be unofficial trails established by Park visitors, not official trails (which did have decent marking). While not a great option for serious backpacking, Rocky Glen Park is a good choice in the Peoria area for a short,...
