Camphill Village Kimberton Hills — Attraction in West Vincent Township

It was more than just volunteering for me. I wouldn’t be able to mention all the experiences I had. However, here’s what I’ve got.

I went there as a volunteer in my final year as a teenager. So, it was kind of my teenhood. The memories were precious, with all the silly and amazing things I did with my friends. I feel like it’s something you should experience at least once in your childhood because I never shut up about that year.

It felt like my second home. It was a place that allowed me to be myself without criticism. I found myself being myself, and my household was comfortable with me being so. That meant a lot.

I learned a lot about living with people and life skills. I made good friends. I feel like I became a more wholesome person after that year was over.

It was a very good place that embraced me. I always feel like going back to visit when life starts to roast me or when I feel too much. This place wasn’t teaching me directly — instead, it made me understand things for myself. It was just the perfect place at the perfect time.

Camphill Village Kimberton Hills is an amazing place and an amazing life-sharing community. Co-workers and their children and adults with special needs live together as extended families and work together in the houses, on the biodynamic dairy farm, in the garden and orchard, at the cafe and bakery, in the weavery, pottery workshop and wood shop. People with developmental disabilities are able to live meaningful, purposeful lives integrated into a caring, diverse community, and those who work and live alongside them are also so enriched by learning to understand and navigate life with diverse needs and abilities. All co-workers are full-time volunteers: no one earns a salary, and idealism and compassion are alive and well. The place itself is beautiful - a green gem in an area whose former farmland has given way to subdivisions. It has earned awards and recognitions for its ongoing work in sustainability, and is also home to many wonderful cultural events and was even named Best Live Music Venue in Chester County a couple of years ago! What an incredible time we had here while volunteering to help with some grounds work. This is such an amazing community and all of the people living here are so talented and warm spirited that it was hard to leave at our scheduled time.
