Back in 2013 I helped clean up this park for a day of service during the National Boy Scout Jamboree. Being a true Yank from Upstate New York, the attitudes and accents from the people who ran this park were a bit of a shock to me. But, boy were they fun! True American Patriots! While they gave me funny stories to tell of the people of West Virginia, they also taught me all about the true history of the American hero John Henry. I'll never forget the men that run this park, and I am glad to be able to call them my countrymen. Read moreIf you are in the area, I recommend you stop and check out the John Henry memorial. The park is nice, though it was not in use at the time of my visit. Their interactive history display is very informative and I really enjoyed the musical options you could choose from, playing different songs about the John Henry legend. The east entrance of Big Bend Tunnel is in the park as well, though it is fenced off now so people can't enter it. It did seem flooded when I was there, so that may be part of the reasoning. Fallout 76 fans will get a kick out of visiting this...

John Henry was a legend in WV and an incredible part of America history. I really enjoyed visiting the new location of the statue and all these very beautiful place has to offer for anything from a quiet picnic, family gathering to a big event with plenty of parking, restroom, water supply and a stage for live bands or to suite whatever needs.
