My family and I attended a mountain bike race here, and stayed on site at the "Lake House".

The trail system: 10/10

Holy cow, the trails are immaculate, fun and FAST. Many times while I was racing I caught myself on the verge of a "yip" because I was having such a great time. I could spend days riding here.

The Lake House: 5/10

This property (Lake House #2) served its purpose for us - a place to crash between practice laps Saturday and the race on Sunday. The "house" is a duplex created out of an old bath house.

Pros: It was cheap ($100/night). It came with linens, including extra pillows, and plenty of towels, washcloths, and hand towels. It also had shampoo, conditioner, body wash available in the shower. There are a couple of picnic tables and a standard park type charcoal grill. Ample parking. Has a small porch.

Cons: The walls between the units are very thin, and we unfortunately got to hear our neighbors having a session in the early morning hours. There were not paper towels or napkins provided and no basic seasonings were available for cooking either, which are things I would usually expect in a "fully stocked kitchen". The furniture is all entirely made out of wood, so nowhere comfortable to sit in the evening. The road is approximately 10 feet from the building, with cars going by all hours of the night. There are no functional windows and no way to control the thermostat and the heat was on full blast for the duration of our stay - it was very hot sleeping. The ceiling fan cannot be on without the light also being on, so that was of no help. There is exposed duct work that clangs all night...

UPDATE: October 23, 2023, Tony and I stopped on our way to Morgantown WV. The park is free to enjoy and the Fall Leaves were bursting with Bright Vibrant Shades of Reds, Oranges, Yellow and Green...and don't forget the Browns!!! The water level in the lake was a little down! The park is located outside of Parkersburg on Route 50 on your way towards Cairo and West Union. There are bath rooms available and plenty of picnic tables with and without shelters, with grills and playgrounds. Pets are welcome on leashes!! Please enjoy what there is offered for FREE & FUN MEMORIES!!!

Today, Deacon, Kayla and I went to Mountwood Park in Walker, WV to take some additional clothes and some snacks for Tony. we couldn't see him but we could drop them off to Angela at the Service Desk. Then we stopped in the park to eat our leftover lunch and to let Deacon burn off some steam and energy in the playground. We then stopped at the lower section near the lake boat rental area (currently closed for renovations) and read the historical markers and signage about the previous Volcano Oil Well, the Stiles Mansion Ruins and the now closed and gone town of Volcano, WV.

Free park, lots to do!!! Tons of picnic areas, shelters, grills...a fun place to check out with some...

The lake is great for fishing and kayaking! They have camping which we did not look at. They also have a few trails and several for mountain biking. We took the trail to Thornhill to see the ruins, expecting to learn a bit about the man who lived there. Unfortunately, when we arrived, most of the signs were illegible, making us quite disappointed about taking the two mile hike out there. We went down the steps as it seemed that was the way we were to continue thinking we would see the rest of Volcano. Unfortunately, the stairs just take you to a separate trail entrance, so we took a different trail that circumvented the hill so we wouldn't have to hike back up that steep incline. Overall a great place and the ruins were fun to observe, just don't expect to learn much about Thornhill.

The trails are cleared. It's so nice to be able to enjoy walks through the many trails mountwood has. Updating my review from 5 years ago. Since then i've hiked way more of the trails. Including the whole lake trail, the whole boot bridge trail and the whole medicine man trail. They we all beautiful in their own way! But so far boot bridge is my favorite! Would hike that trail over and over agian! We also put our kayaks in the water for the 1st time ever in the lake. So beautiful this time of year! The water is clam. So great for us beginners. We will definitely be doing lots of kayaking here! Adding more pictures for 2025 to this review from 2020.

Came here to play disc golf. I am giving three stars because the woods are very pretty but this course is rough. A few holes okay but some are just stupid. No signage can be difficult to find the holes and you better be ready to hike. I feel like with some adjustments there is potential here to make this a better disc golf course. I will also say I only played the front nine so I cannot say how the back nine of the course is. In general some parts of the park seem run down and not very well maintained (ex: old abandoned bathroom near the start of the disc golf course… a working bathroom there would have been nice and appreciated :) )
