The admission price is WELL WORTH the detailed historical tour of the life and times of Pearl S. Buck, and this wonderful home filled with amazing memorabilia. The tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and kept my attention for the entire tour, despite the fact that I knew very little to nothing about one of our country’s greatest writers and novelist. By time I left all I wanted to do was to go home and start reading the trilogy that begins with The Great Earth, and several of the other works mentioned during the tour.
Photography is allowed for personal use only. I took a lot of pictures, and rather than post them here wouldn’t want to spoil it for those who will be visiting this gem of a museum.
There is a small but very nice gift shop with everything you could possibly want on Pearl S. Buck.
This is a museum and historical home that is well worth going out of your way for. It’s not that far from The Greenbrier (about an hour), Beartown State Park (15 minutes), and Droop Mountain Battleground State Park (5 minutes). If you’re at any of those, make your way here. It most certainly...
Read moreAs a WV History nerd, this visit has been on my list for years. It did not disappoint. The home has been beautifully restored and is full of priceless family heirlooms. The museum director did a fantastic job of telling the story of Pearl Buck and her entire family, their place in West Virginia, and their contributions to the world. I can't wait to dive back into her Good Earth trilogy and give them a re-read. I feel as if I understand Pearl Buck for the first time after this visit. She was the first American woman to win the Pulitzer and the Nobel Prizes for Literature but she was so much more to the people she knew and the lives she changed.
This is a visit that you won't regret. I also encourage you to visit Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park and Beartown State Park while you're...
Read moreWhat a wonderful little gem in a beautiful little part of West Virginia. We were in the area and we sort of stumbled on this place. The museum director Phyliss is a passionate host and opened the museum even though we were there outside of normal working hours. This is the birthplace of Pearl S. Buck, an American treasure, and should be on your list of places to stop by. You...
