Beautiful preserve and a great place to hike! Hill views from atop Big hill to the south and Chase Hill Ridge to the north. Lots of cool bridges over the Pawcatuck river and Tomaquag Brooke Trials are well marked Forest notes: Forest age ranges from clear-cut to 100+ years old. The clear cut area was likely cut for the endangered new england cotton tail rabbit. Atop Big hill is an Oak/briar forest, going off trail here isn't recommended. On the Chase Hill Ridge the forest is old and bucolic with a great diversity of large trees. The muscle wood here is large and plentiful. The flood plains along the Tomquag and Pawcatuck river has a wide variety of forest types ranging from Beech, Maple, Mixed pine, Mixed oak with clethra being a dominant understory plant.

Went out today for a short 2.5 mile hike. Orange to blue, then back to the parking lot. Lots of Birds active today. One of the more interesting birdsongs I've heard. Also got to see quite a few animals and flowers near or on the trail. A turtle, a salamander, and a gnarly spider carrying tons of babies.

Well marked and signed preserve with a couple of fabulous bridges. It has a fantastic overview at Big Hill and the area on the north side of the river has lots of beautiful old farm walls (and another overview). We managed to create a 8 mile loop out of not that big an area.

Very confusing trail map that is poorly to scale. Trails aren't maintained often or at all and overall not an exciting adventure. On the plus side, Very beautiful lillypad pond and a couple good spots to sit but the "Big Hill" isn't high enough to clear the tree line so there aren't any great vistas. Probably great for dog walkers as rhode island isn't known for...

Awesome place to explore with kids, hiking, biking, fishing and observing nature at its finest. I grew up playing in the preserve (back then we called it Big Hill) but I'll always be connected to the preserve as so many memories of me and my kids were had at the preserve. Totally recommend taking a hike in it's entirety to anyone that loves...
