Charmlee Wilderness Park — Attraction in Westlake Village

I have to say, the experience here was a bit disappointing. I was really excited to come for a hike to catch the views of the ocean, but on the day we arrived it was so cloudy and hazy down below that the ocean was not even visible. However, in the park itself we were above the clouds, and the sun was so strong and little to no shade was there, making the experience fairly uncomfortable. In addition to that, there were active rattlesnakes around, and we were warned numerous times by other hikers to be careful. We ended up leaving without completing the trail due to this, and went down instead to Zuma Beach and walked along the coast and then over to Malibu Bluffs Park, both of which were more pleasant experiences. I really liked this one. Awesome views of Malibu, pretty oak groves and a nice meadow. I went after the rains and it was all green. Some hiking web sites only gave it 3 stars, maybe it was too easy? I wasn't expecting much and was surprised. I liked the botney and lower loop trails.

I did it as a change of pace to my normal 5 mile morning walk. I loaded up the GPX file on my watch and just started down the trails. I managed to easily string together the little hikes into a 5 mile hike with a 1000 feet of climbing. You can make it shorter too. This is one of my favorite hiking destinations. Trees, hills, wild flowers in the spring, ocean view and easy hike. Beautiful & best to do from fall, winter, spring. It can get hot in the summer. It has a real bathroom at the beginning of the hike. Parking is available for small fee. Water near picnic tables. It is great tasting well water. The views of the ocean are incredible.
