They have destroyed Willoughby. I courted my wife here 17 years ago. My kids learned to swim here. I've passed this lake daily for nearly 2 decades. What the tourists have done to Westmore and Lake Willoughby is absolutely criminal. It's very sad, it is no longer quaint and idyllic, it has been turned into a commercialized vacation land. The little cottages that have been around for nearly a century are being torn down by new owners who build a massive and ugly structure in the same tiny lot so they can use it a handful of times a year.
"They paved paradise and put up a parking lot" where south beach used to be, and this parking lot has surveillance cameras watching the main road 24/7. All those involved in the plunder of this once pristine place should be ashamed...
Read moreDo NOT try to use google to give you directuins to "Lake Willoughby". While I have notified Google several times, and the town of Westmore and private residents spent money for signage, people continue to go the wrong way. Using this point will guide you to a private road where yhere is no beach. Google, apparently wouod like to see people drive through a small section of woods and into the lake itself. Beware "technology"! If you would like to avoid being reprimanded for driving on a private road, making U turns, asking for directions, driving down sometimes bumpy dirt roads, and spending uneeded dollars on fuel, I recommend using the "South Beach" waypoint. There is plenty of parking and...
Read moreI didn’t realize this gem of a place was less than an hours drive away from me. The view is spectacular, it’s such a beautiful place to kayak, paddleboard, or canoe. I believe on the north end where the beach is there’s a parking lot across from it. The beach is right off the street and it’s not very big so it gets full. I suggest going early to get a spot, it’s worth it. They also have hiking trails heading towards the south end I believe. Lake Willoughby has a free public beach on the north end for sunbathing and swimming. The south end is home to a nude beach off to the side. They have a store & cabins along the way. You won’t be...
