I recently saw The Addams Family at the Plaza Theatre. Having seen many productions there, I was not surprised that this one has become one of my all time favorites. Of course, I say that about every production. Every time I think that this group of dedicated and talented volunteers (yes - they are all volunteers, from the actors and actresses, to the sound and light artists, to the music directors, choreographers, costume designers, stage manager, concessions managers, etc., etc., etc.) cannot possibly get any better, they prove me wrong. And I find that completely delightful. I am so thankful that we have the Plaza Theatre in my small town of Wharton, Texas. The Plaza is also the recipient of generous production underwriters and sponsors, charitable contributions and legacy gifts (The Plaza Theatre, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization). If you have never been, please do yourself a favor and take in a performance. Arrive early, and treat yourself to the best popcorn in Texas. Choose a drink from their selection of wines, beer, sodas, and yes, coffee and hot chocolate. Have a sweet tooth? Got that covered as well. Then sit back and enjoy some of the best community theater around. After the show, it's not over! Stick around to meet and greet the actors. You may find that a lot of them are...

What's always nice is when someone offers you, "Free! Free! Free!" The Plaza sent out a last-minute invite to a free viewing of two one-act plays that were preparing to go to competition.
Boling High School students presented a charming performance of "A Young Lady of Property," by Wharton's own native son, Horton Foote. The teen actress portraying the young property owner got better and better as she warmed up to her role.
The veterans of the Plaza performed a satisfyingly humorous romp through, "Priscilla Dreams the Answer," by Walt McGough. In this wacky story, Priscilla met her game show hero and a couple of loud aliens and was reluctantly recruited to save the world! As part of the Texas Nonprofit Theatre group, this talented team of community actors won a regional contest and was refining their performance for the upcoming state competition. I know that they...
Read moreVery neat and historic theater that the little town of Wharton is doing its best keeping it alive. Saw their redemption of Cinderella. It was whimsy and well choreographed for it being a production in a town of 8500. The best part however was that it had very obvious support of the community, as it was a completely full house. Was pleasantly surprised with Wharton's little niche of cultural avant garde. Probably in the cutest part of town, nestled around the old historic...
