Very beautiful park, though it is in the middle of nowhere (quite literally - their website reminds visitors to get gas and food before heading here as the nearest services are at least 30 miles away). This is my first time in this part of Nebraska, and it was very well worth the trek "off the beaten path".
I visited when the visitor's center was open. And though it was the hottest part of the day, I still did the 2.5 mile or so hike to the buttes. The trail is accessible (3 or 4 foot square concrete slabs the entire way), though there were some spots where the slabs had heaved up or had an inch or so lip. If someone was in a wheelchair, they could take the hike with some assistance on those problem spots.
The trail was beautiful, from the Niobrara river crossing to the loop of the buttes and dig sites, but with very little shade. The NPS has 3 benches with shade placed along the path that gives a little reprieve for a drink of water, but be prepared with good clothing and sunscreen. Also bring water if the building is closed - I didn't notice outside sources (but check their website on this - I may have just missed it).
The visitor's center had some nice exhibits on the fossils, some indigenous artifacts, and personal belongings of James Cook. Very interesting history to learn, from millions of years ago to about...
Β Β Β Read moreAgate Fossil Beds is a hidden gem thatβs well worth visiting if you find yourself in the area. The site offers a fascinating look into ancient history, showcasing fossils that tell the story of prehistoric mammals and their environment. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable and share detailed, engaging information about the exhibits, making the experience both educational and enjoyable. Plus, there is no admission fee, which is a fantastic bonus for those looking for a budget-friendly yet enriching activity.
One aspect to keep in mind is that the space can feel a bit crowded at times. On the day of our visit, a group of college students congregated near the entrance area, which made it difficult to move around freely and took away from the visit somewhat. While this was a minor inconvenience, itβs worth noting if youβre planning your visit during peak times or special events.
Despite this, Agate Fossil Beds offers a unique opportunity to explore well-preserved fossil exhibits and learn from passionate guides who bring history to life. If youβre passing through the region or enjoy natural history, this site is an informative and worthwhile stop that...
Β Β Β Read moreOut in the middle of magnificent clean and open country. While taking my son through these lands years ago (he was 10 at the time) I'd asked him, "Isn't it beautiful out here?" "DAD!", he exclaimed, agitated. "There isn't anything OUT here!" "Aw, son," I responded. "There's EVERYTHING out here. You're just to young to appreciate it yet." This Nat'l Monument has a wonderful Visitor's Center with a decent library of reference books upstairs that we are allowed to use while visiting. It also has great displays of times long since gone by, from fossils and the creatures they represent to Native American photos with their notations and the history behind them. Am truly hoping that this Visitor Center will be back open before the groundhogs be bringing my mail, though pandemic being as it is: It's understandable. We got spoiled, people. There's a rather unique peace about this place that hints at wondrous things happening here in the past. The...
