Bicycled up this beast in 1982 on my cross country bike trip I took (solo) when I got out of the Navy ! The alternative was a long, long 7% grade up US 95 with trucks and cars galore. There was not 1 car the entire climb, the large amount of switchbacks flattened the grade considerably and could have been accomplished in one long pull if you wanted but the wonderful views beg you not to. The only encounter I had the whole time was when coming around one of the many switchbacks I came upon two horses standing in the road enjoying the shade. They both looked at me as I went by and Iβm pretty sure they nodded at me.
