I give the animals a 5 star The place seemed out of balance and had a cultists vibe. At the end we were Givin the option for a flopping fish? Turned out It was a fortune telling fish. The options for the results were poor at best. One boy asked what happens when it doesn't move ? The educator said " it means your dead" Poor kid held it for five minutes seeking a different result. He finally got one. ( hes jealous) I felt this was in bad taste children are impressionable and as educators understand you are in charge of your life not a Chinese piece of fish plastic not sure what were going for here And trust me there's no extra effort here with this review it was easy and I did bother to look around your gift shoppe since we are lovers of cheap chineese plastic figures and even bought something because that's what we do but overall the gift shop was uninspired. Ice cream shoppe was good ,fast and friendly.. get rid of the b.s. magic fish that are not educational ask the kids if they learned anything at the end... Also fish bowl of cheap give away were unsanitary with kids digging thru them.... And yes I will always take the extra time to express my view when I believe children are being misguided. Take this advice to heart and to be so offended telling a child that their dead while they stare at a piece of plastic hoping for it to move was damaging when a chance to teach science, body temperature and heat rate changes in body temperature from one person to the next or even one species to the next was present. But you quit teaching and went to some dumb stuff You may have good intentions but you need to fully understand the scope of your position the criticism would not be in play if you Hadn't put yourself in the role of educator from the minute we walked through the door so either you planned it this way or you need to look closer at what your doing there. Educators? That was a joke! So many chances to educate left undone. Nothing about the transformation of the butterfly nothing of the catapiler changing nothing of how if your a certain way no you can change like the butterfly nothing about the dpiders and eight legs nothing about temperature and where the animals come from how about the moth that lives for five days with no mouth? Nothing about the math of how long his life is compared to ours and how every second to him was like a day to us or if they lay eggs or are good parents Educators???? Really???? Just drop the label at the door and youd get 5 stars keep the label and you'll keep the one till you do better and I'll stop by again because I think 10 bucks is cheap to see an American...

We came while in MI on vacation. It just happened to open on the last day we were in Traverse City. I was so excited to take my 2.5yo but when we pulled in I was very skeptical and kind of disappointed at how small it was, esp at $9/adult. I do think it's very over priced, but it did end up being fun even though the whole building was about 600-700sq ft total.

It was like 40° so most of the butterflies were not flying around. Definitely go when it's warmer so you at least have a chance of one landing on you. We were also told that later in the season they have closer to 600 butterflies in the small room, there were about 300 for us but I think we only saw maybe 50.

The bugs were interesting but in very small cages so if a lot of people are there it might take a while for everyone to see them. They will get some out for you if you ask. We got to hold them too, which was fun. At first we were one of 2 families there and it was the first day they were open so maybe they were just really excited, but one of the employees was always right with us telling us about the bugs. It was nice when we had a question but it would have also been nice to just look at them with my son.

Over all it was a good experience, you can stay as long as you want and go back to whichever exhibit you want as many times as you want. For the price though, I would not go back, esp if you have a little one who won't want to stay for...

If 0 stars was an option, that would best suite my experience. The bugs were beautiful and well looked after, but one staff member ruined my view of this place. I came with two of my friends and after being in the butterfly house for a few minutes, we all had butterflies on us. We were told not to pick up the butterflies but when holding out your finger, they simply walked in your hand. As we were taking pictures one staff member walked up to us and began accusing us of picking up the butterflies. We told her that we did not pick them up, and she threatened to look at the cameras. We simply told her that we held out our finger and they walked on which seemed to infuriate her even more. At that point she walked over and swatted the butterflies off of my friends with a paint brush (which in my opinion is more harmful than letting the butterflies walk on our fingers) and very rudely and unprofessionally told them not to do it again. This made us all very uncomfortable and felt as though we were being punished and ridiculed instead of educated. We then left the room and tried to look at the other exhibits but our experience was ruined. It is important to note that all other staff members were extremely friendly and explained all of the animals well. If you are looking for a fun place to go, do...

TLDR: stop here if you visit the area!! All ages and groups will have a good time. This is a super cool, worthy visit. It's well worth the stop. Our group was: 13 year old boy, 31 year old man, 31 year old woman. We ALL had an amazing time. Starting with the butterfly room, and the great staff there, we had butterflies "not follow the rules" and randomly land on us, as well as staff offer to let them rest on us when available. We enjoyed the selected visits, as well as the others, and removal of either at will. Onto the insects and the incredibly knowledgeable staff for that part. We all learned a lot, about a lot! We all gained a whole new appreciation for even the insects any of us didn't like. If you have a fear of spiders, there is a small cove with spiders and spider like insects, that is easily avoidable (they're all in that small area) but I would also suggest going into despite your fear (not only calming facts about the spiders, but especially the NOT spiders! I was almost mindblown!)
