2 mile tunnel through the nountain heading towards Whittier. (Away as well, I guess, depending on perspective). It only runs one way, so you may want to check the schedule. I believe it opens to traffic on the hour headed into Whittier, and on the half hour headed from Whittier. If you get caught and have to wait it is a good time to read about the history of the tunnel as it is a pretty good story (or preload the page before you get here as Internet access probably isn't going to work here). Beautiful view while you wait.

What a cool experience. The entrance to the tunnel is absolutely gorgeous. One of the best picture spots of our trip. It's a must. The tunnel itself is quite interesting as it's a one-way tunnel that is shared by both trains and cars. I've never seen anything like it. Whittier is a very small town with very few options for restaurants. It has a lot of fishing, hiking and boating. There is a ferry available to travel across the water.

Whittier, Alaska is a place that is a hidden gem. The people are really nice and the businesses all have great customer service! And yes the sun does shine here. One of my favorite places to work and play. Some of the best fishing in Alaska!
