I went to two culinary workshops. One with 8 and another with 16. Both were with Chef Jamelah Kauffman. She is an excellent chef who specializes in gluten free. Her helper, Rey, was friendly and helpful.
Turns out that the way the workshops are set up that the group breaks up into smaller groups assigned to each part pf the menu. As such, while there may be 4 dishes to learn, you will only get to see how to make one or two.
The first workshop of 8 was making a lamb dinner and I did watch how to cut a lamb chop but I only able to work on kale salad. I didn't mind it as I knew a how to cook a couple of others.
The second workshop was with 16 and I got assigned to a group of 4 that was me and three related women. They treated me quite rudely dismissing any input I said. One even giving me a dismissive "uh huh" even though the chef just told me what to do next.
I found the chef was quite busy running around helping each group that this wasn't able to be corrected. I was disappointed and I don't know if I want to come back after that experience. (I don't blame the chef, just the fact that her attention had to be divided so much as the helpers were just for cleaning and prep work.)
As such, you will learn to cook good food but you may have to attend the same workshop more than once to learn to cook everything and the groups can get to be problematic without...
Read moreHave done some painting nights and a cooking night here. The painting nights are fun but not extremely guided. However it is relaxing and the materials are all ready for you.
The cooking class was an experience and although I definitely appreciate the effort, it was rather chaotic. The person running the class was wanting the class to make like five to ten different things total and you could pick which dishes you wanted to make (but no duplicates). Someone else chose the same dish as my husband and I so we therefore could not make it. We had to just settle for making a dessert which really was not what I paid $60 apiece for - to essentially just use a mixer. The food was good at the end but I did not feel like I learned anything. The class was big and it was honestly kind of stressful to me. I envisioned we could each get to make the same thing, have all the ingredients ready and waiting at our places in an orderly systematic way to ensure we all get an equal opportunity and experience. What we got was a bit of a disorganized evening. Again, the food was good at the end and the instructor and assistants were very nice. But I think I need a bit more structure. This might just be a...
Read moreWarning if you are bring children... I can only give this 3 stars because exhibits were NOT child friendly. They have plenty of classes for children so I assumed, it was child friendly. I wish the receptionist would have given a gentle warning that large, up close and personal genitalia were depicted and on exhibit. It ruined our chance to appreciate the other artists. Unfortunately in our world bodies are exploited and used. Therefore, in my opinion, if the art is pornographic and/or degrading I don’t want to see it or expose children to it either. I gave 3 stars and not 0 because it’s a beautiful building and could be a wonderful contribution to the community. Not a good experience for me...
