I went expecting the worse of this park regarding other reviews on the parks cleanliness, we experienced the complete opposite. We camped (tented) at the equestrian (RV) camp ground. It's a nice place to camp with water and electricity but bad smell if your not use to horses. The area was nice and decently clean including the comfort station. (Note: there is no fee at this camp ground to use the showers.) The showers however did need some detail cleaning. The Robbers Cave trail was very nice, has beautiful views and just an awesome time spent with the family. Being out of shape, the trail was a bit strenuous but definatly worth it! Carlton lake was a nice experience with beautiful views of the bluffs but very muddy (brown) looking water. Thankfully their is a pool on site for $5 a person. Traveling the area we saw another camp ground Deep Ford (or fork?), that had tent camping by the water of Carlton lake (terrible restrooms though???). I pack my own porta potty but not a shower. A couple of those sites did offer water and electricity, a utility I do not mind paying for when camping, and probably the camp ground we will stay next time for sure...I may purchase my own porta shower! At the equestrian, you have to drive to the water to swim but a very short drive. The staff at the gift shop was very friendly and informative of the trails in the area. About ten minutes from the park is Wilburton, OK with a decent priced grocery store and the Choctaw Travel Plaza and Casino that sells 25lb bags of ice for $4.20 and bundles of wood roughly $4 bucks. We stayed two nights and 2.5 days, this was not enough time to visit other trails, next time we will plan for a longer stay. Robbers Cave offers a unique outdoor experience that is worth the drive from OKC. I had a great time with the family and discovered it may be time to get in the routine of...
Read moreCame here to stay at the campground for quite a few days. I opted to stay in the equestrian grounds. I found the paved path to drive through the trees a tight squeeze for somewhere that’s supposed to accommodate horse trailers with living quarters. Thankfully I did not have a large trailer, but it was unsettling at times hoping to make it around a corner between trees.
The other thing I disliked was other campers had left huge black bags of horse manure at the end of sites. Which I imagine must be the expected behaviour- as it was common throughout. However- when I arrived there was bags at some sites that didn’t get picked up or cleaned out the entire six nights I stayed here. I feel like that’s kind of nasty. They even had garbage pick up. So I don’t know whose responsible for that but you can’t tell me it’s normal to sit around like that for almost a weeks time.
I found the sites to be a bit cracked and older and hard to level. Though most had shade which was really nice.
The showers were meh- mid grade I’d say. Dead bugs at times and some mould. Not sure how frequently they were cleaned. Free to use. However I didn’t like the way it was a button push system that I kept needing to push.
The dumping ground was a gaping hole and I didn’t have the right adaptor for it- normally the one I have fits standard. So I had to go without otherwise mine would’ve fallen in.
It wasn’t bad otherwise minus the abundance of spiders (which isn’t the state parks fault). The sites could use more cleaning and leaf blowing as I’ve seen done in other parks. No laundry services here. The leaves on the trails made me nervous regarding copperheads so I didn’t do much hiking, stuck to the paved paths and the road mostly.
Out of all the parks I’ve been to so far it’s the one I...
Read moreThe park itself is serene and nice to hike and enjoy the lakes, lots of trails human and dog friendly. The sun rises and sunsets are beautiful from the view of the camping area and lakeside. Not much in the way of fall colors around the park mostly evergreens. You have to check out by 11:00 a.m. and you cannot check in until 4:00 p.m., you also cannot pick which cabin you want to be in. This was our second time to go and use a cabin. The first time all the amenities were provided in the cabin except for food. This time zero amenities are provided, you must bring your own dishes, cookware etc. There is a refrigerator a stove and a microwave. There is also a coffee pot which we did not use it was dirty. In the bathroom the shower curtain rested about 5 inches up from the edge of the shower so water floods across the bathroom floor when you take a shower, and there's so much softener in the water tank it makes your hands feel slimy making it hard to tell when you've actually got all the soap rinsed off. Sit carefully onto The toilet because it's a rocker. If you use the pull out bed in the couch check it over really good, ours had dirty sheets and we had to request more. We stayed in cabin 103 if you use the grill for this cabin it is in an inconvenient location around the back side of your cabin and your fire pit is on the opposite side of the cabin from that. If we return to stay overnight we will take...
