We asked when we got there if there was anything free to do. They said no. I decided to check it out myself. There was a five mile drive through the island. Every so often there are boards to read and you can get out of the car to explore. Luckily, I packed snacks and drinks. We drove through at our leisure with the air conditioner blasting. There were also a few beach areas to enjoy. Pack a lunch, beach chair, umbrella and a float.

We visit the parkway frequently, the commute from Jamestown to Yorktown is a nice leisurely one with many historical markers along the way. Visit the Jamestown visitor center while in the area its worth the trip all in itself, wildlife is abundant so keep a sharp eye out for them.

Archers hope historical point. Has a grassy area you can sit on. Not a big beach but lots of room to swim. Nice place to park and enjoy the beautiful scenery overlooking James River.

A very nice stop overlooking the Back river along the Colonial Parkway The Jamestown Island Historical Plaque is located along the south side of the scenic Colonial Parkway. This marker serves as a gateway to America’s earliest colonial history since it is situated near the site of the first permanent English settlement in the New World. The plaque provides visitors with a brief yet insightful overview of the struggles and triumphs of the settlers who arrived in 1607. The text on the sign explains the significance of Jamestown as the birthplace of English America. The site is easily accessible from the main road and the plaque stands in a peaceful, wooded setting with an overlook onto the river which leads out to the James River. It is a very nice place to take a moment and reflect. The location is fairly well-maintained, with space for parking and an inviting atmosphere for history enthusiasts, cyclists, and casual visitors alike. While the plaque itself is a small stop, it connects visitors to the larger historical narrative of Jamestown Island to the west, where they can explore the remains of James Fort, the Glasshouse, and the Jamestown Settlement Museum. For those interested in early American history, the Jamestown Island Historical Plaque is a good stop that provides valuable context before seeing many of the other sights...

Evidently, I visited a historical plaque along the colonial parkway. If memory serves, the historical marker explained the significance of the channel running off of Glebe Gut, referred to at one point in time as "The Narrows." Interesting to imagine the boat traffic through there over hundreds of years. Part of the enjoyment of the colonial parkway is never knowing what you might see for the first time, even if you've been...
