Nice clean Camping spots, Take your on supplies like a full tank of Gas and Water and Warm Clothes and Food, Tents, I have seen 6 different Bears on Different Trips up there one time I saw 3 Bears all together and a Herd of Deer Running all together I think that day there was something spooking then like a Small Earthquake it was something makeing them all run like that You can see lots of Deer, Bears if you keep your eyes open to see them They don't wait for you to see them so they run if they hear you, but you can surprise them Beautiful Green tall Trees and Wild Flowers in the Spring and you can Play in the Snow in the Winter Kids love the Snow. I like to just go on a Sunday drive up there it is pretty up there in the Mountains. Cool in the hot summer days, Forest Road 7 off Highway 162 or Stonyford, Ca. Or out of Paskata, Ca or off Highway 20 near Williams ,Ca.and Ukiha, Ca. or Red Bluff, Ca. Phones and GPS may not work up there, But you have to pay attention to where you are going so you don't get...

A very welcoming beautiful forest of large oaks, tall pine trees towering overhead. Swaying gently back and forth with the cool winds singing through the pine needles and cones. You know that you are in God's domain of the Mountains where my Grandfather would take us out to cut firewood to keep his Mount Hannah Redwood house warm for all of us grandchildren. Memories and the breezes of the Trees is a very peaceful and Spiritual reminder of those who have gone on before me, never having a chance to say goodbye to so many. My children and I are keeping cool up in the mountains of Peace, while severe heat is in the Valleys below during this intense heat spell. We thank God for sharing the Beauty and Peace of this place with us. It is like the wind is fanning us with the cool breeze of the Love of God keeping us content to stay with him a few days more. A very beautiful graceful place to stay and be at Peace with the World God created for all of us to...

All I can say is be careful here. I've been coming here since I was a kid, and I'll never come here without a chainsaw and hatchet again.

My last weekend here recently during the final weekend of hunting season scared the hell out of me.

Much of the area has been burned in recent years, so there's a lot of deadfall and still-standing dead trees. I camped out in one of my typical spots which happened to be a prior wildfire area.

My second night there, the wind kicked up in a major way. Trees were crashing and falling all around me all night long. I didn't sleep a wink.

In the morning my truck was surrounded by fallen trees. Luckily I had some rope, I had to use my truck to pull trees out of the way just so I could leave my camp. It took me over an hour.

I also had to clear a big fallen tree out of the middle of road 308. Bring a chainsaw, hatchet, shovel and rope. I'll never come here...

The road is super dangerous, if you drive big car, you prepared drive on the rough road, maybe it is ok. But if you are not prepared, car have no enough oil, and only know follow the google map, you will feel that you lost in forest and nobody will save you. And your car is small one, 4 lights on, because the rough and steep road. Some road blocks by tree the google map leads you there, and you explore that no way to go. We even try to move those big dead trees to go through, and feel disappoint, maybe dead here. Then we decided only drive on main road, finally we came out of mountain top mountain low forests with thousands and thousands of trees, but nobody.

The forest is huge and I wasn't able to explore all of it but I did see a lot of the southwest section. Large parts of the forest are burned and desolate which actually looks pretty cool. There is plenty that isn't burned so don't let that stop you. You can see herds of elk near Lake Pillsbury. The roads are in very poor condition so smaller cars definitely aren't recommended. By poor condition I mean they are borderline undriveable in smaller cars. There aren't many amenities either so come prepared.

Mendocino National Forest is a nice large natural area that I would consider to be rural. Reaching the central area of the forest is a journey in itself due to its isolation and 90% or more of the roads in the forest boundary are dirt. Could easily spend a few days here exploring all the dirt roads and landscape, but not to many unique features or trails available in the forest for hiking, definitely plenty for the off road enthusiast and overland campers.
