Read moreSquires Castle in Ohio is not just a stunning historical landmark; it's a magical setting that holds a special place in my heart as the venue where I got married. From the moment you arrive, the enchanting atmosphere of this castle makes it feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale. Many couples choose to tie the knot here, and it’s easy to see why!
Built in the early 1900s by the wealthy industrialist and inventor, J. H. Squires, the castle was originally intended as a gatehouse for a larger estate that was never completed. The architecture is a beautiful blend of medieval and rustic styles, featuring striking stonework and charming turrets that give it an air of grandeur. Its picturesque setting, surrounded by lush greenery and rolling hills, creates a serene backdrop that is perfect for both ceremonies and photographs.
What makes Squires Castle so special is not only its beauty but also its rich history. Over the years, it has become a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. The castle is situated within the Cleveland Metroparks, making it easily accessible for those looking to explore the great outdoors. The surrounding parkland offers scenic trails and lovely picnic areas, adding to the overall charm of the location.

Read moreDon't let the name fool you - Squire's Castle is less a castle and more a picturesque shell of a house open to the public. In front of the castle there is an expansive grass lawn (excellent for frisbee, picnics, playing with pets/children/spouses, or just sunbathing), encircled by a paved walking path. Those feeling up for a hike can strike out on a couple of different trails from the castle parking lot that lead around the North Chagrin Reservation. Some of the trails can get pretty steep, so plan accordingly (especially if the trails are wet), but the views from the tops of the hills are worth the hike in any season.
While the castle itself is beautiful to behold both from outside as well as from within (it's no wonder the spot is popular for wedding photographs), its small size means that visitors will soon be left desiring other forms of entertainment. Unfortunately, this is all too easy to find; on days with good weather visitors are "treated" to a spectacle that resembles nothing if not the second siege of Troy: armies of small children trample through the castle, hurtling projectiles, and occasionally one another, out through open doors and windows. The screaming hordes make exploring the castle inadvisable, if not downright dangerous; those interested in observing the architecture are encouraged to do so from a safe distance.
Final verdict: the "castle" itself is worth about 5 minutes to investigate and take selfies (unless you're a hyperactive child, in which case you'll be amused for hours); the winding hiking trails in the hills behind it are much more...
