This weekend we decided to venture off and discover some new walking/hiking trails.
The Flower Hill Nature Preserve is it good trail.
The path travels through forested area, winding through valleys and to the edge a cliff. Down below is a creek. The trail will lead downhill towards that Creek and flatter trails. This part that goes downhill would be the most labor intensive part of the trail (when going back up).
The trail itself is a good walk. Not too long and not to labor intensive for those who don't want to overexert themselves too much. The trail is a good walk for couples. We passed quite a few trees with dozens of people names and initials carved out. :)
At the bottom where the creek is, I think the trail goes a little further. It was quite tranquil down there so we enjoyed the peacefulness of nature.
We'll...
Read moreThe trail moves along a deep ravine over Moccasin Creek. It contains Rhododendron and other mountain plants. Like Medoc Mountain it's a little geological pocket remaining from an ancient mountain range. Mid-April visit had rhododendron blooming along with wild azaelea.
Fairly easy until the ravine. There are some sections of roots. I found it difficult along some areas at the edge of the ravine. Narrow footing with roots. The final 100' or so down to the creek was too steep for me to navigate. The creek seems to be the boundary before private land.
Beautiful place. Pretty good workout for a 1 mile trail with the elevation. Loved it. My cousins want us to...
Read moreFlower Hill Nature Preserve in central NC is “a freak of nature”. Its geographical anomaly was discovered in the 1930s when the Catawba Rhododendrons were found in this area. These rhododendrons usually find a home in the Appalachian mountains, which are 200 miles further in the western North Carolina. However, the microenvironment that exists in this area allows the survival of a unique disjunct mountain community in this 25-acre nature preserve maintained by Triangle Land Conservancy. Having said all of that, there aren't a lot of trails and I wouldn't bother to drive to this place from Raleigh -Durham unless the flowers...
