I was told by a friend about Saori weaving, and I was immediately interested in exploring the craft. I’d never touched a loom before and wasn’t familiar with any of the materials or processes, it just struck me as something I had to try. It’s always exciting to think about learning something new, but it can also be an intimidating experience. When I expressed to my friend about my desire to learn about Saori weaving, my friend said I should contact Kathy at Wimberley Valley Saori. I contacted Kathy and we had a great conversation about her place and classes. Kathy has created a beautiful space, perfect for learning all about Saori weaving and it’s principles. Because I traveled from another state, I stayed on site while doing my three day workshop. Kathy was warm, obviously passionate about the Saori process and was an incredible instructor. Upon my arrival, we had a great conversation over coffee getting to know each other and then we jumped right in to weaving. I found it so easy and intuitive. It was incredible to sit down, and within minutes begin creating a one-of-a-kind, hand made weaving. Kathy created a perfect balance of instruction and play time. I could take what I was being taught in simple steps and apply them as I went. She gave me the space I needed to play and the inspiration to challenge myself as I went. The experience fully exceeded my expectations. I made really beautiful things, learned a ton, loved being in the beautiful studio space full of every color of yarn you can imagine, and above all made a great new friend. I hope anyone who is interested in Saori weaving finds Wimberley Valley Saori and books time with Kathy. It’s an...
Read moreEntering Wimberley SAORI Studio was like stepping into a fiber wonderland. Owner and Certified SAORI Instructor, Kathy Utts, graciously shared SAORI techniques and encouraged possibilities each step of the way. There's no lack of inspiration as you are surrounded by the natural beauty of the Hill Country on the outside and all the luscious cones of yarn on the inside. I found myself totally immersed in the art of weaving as I threw my first ever shuttle into the open shed. There are no limitations and no mistakes in this free-form style of weaving that gives the imagination full reign to just create. I highly recommend Kathy and her studio. Do yourself a huge favor and come and experience the Japanese Saori Style of Weaving and leave with a fresh perspective of expressing your...
Read moreKathy Utt's class was so inspiring and so much fun. I have been weaving off and on for a long time and enjoy traditional weaving, but the Saori method is very freeing: no worries about mistakes or uneven salvages because it doesn't matter. My fabric, as well as every other class member's fabric, turned out beautiful and usable as a table runner, wall hanging, or garment. Having the loom already warped and ready to start weaving was a real plus. I also think that the 2-day class was perfect because it allowed us to weave a substantial piece of cloth. I highly recommend Kathy's Saori...
