We timed this visit just right with a choice encounters who gave us some inside information. She was a professor in forensics and met someone working for the fire department who told her details of one of the arson occurrences. There was a couple in love that wrote their names on the bridge like many visitors do. They broke up and the ex-boyfriend was so angry that he attempted to burn their names off of the bridge. He inadvertently burned the bridge down in the process. Now they have sprinklers installed in all of the bridges to prevent arson in the future (some even have security cameras).

The original 76 foot long timber town lattice truss was built in 1883 to span Cedar Creek by Benton Jones and George K. Foster. The current bridge, which sits in Cedar Bridge Park north of Winterset, is a reproduction that was erected in 2004 (the original was twice destroyed by fire). It was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1976, and removed in 2002. The site is beautiful during fall foliage.

The Cedar Covered Bridge, originally built in 1883 by Harvey P. Jones, is one of the iconic bridges in Madison County. This bridge, featured on the cover of the novel "The Bridges of Madison County," has been rebuilt twice after being destroyed by arson in 2002 and 2017. It is historically significant and sits in a picturesque setting. It is a popular spot for photos and picnics.

Everyone has heard of the Bridges of Madison County. Cedar Bridge is one of them and we stopped here to take a look at this one. Cedar Bridge is situated in a park setting, and I could envision this lovely area being used as a backdrop for weddings. It's also good for walking, and a picnic spot. We drove under the bridge, turned around, parked the car in a small lot and walked in the area. The parking is free and is a small gravel lot for just a very few cars. On this weekday, we were almost by ourselves. It's not suitable for an overnight stay. Cedar Bridge is located eight miles NE of Winterset on Cedar Bridge Rd., east of Hwy. 169. I recommend this stop. There is no charge for...

The new bridge looks great! Its so peaceful there. You can have a picnic beside it and your kids can play in the play area. Alot of people take family photos there or graduation pictures. This landmark is here to stay. The Covered Bridges mean alot to Madison County. People come from all over the world to see our Covered Bridges. You just cant go through Madison County without stopping and seeing them. Each one is unique in their own way. I recommend coming and seeing them. You wont be...
