This is the Holliwell Bridge. I loved all six of the covered bridges! It was fun hunting them down and getting pictures of each one. Of course, the Roseman Bridge was the most important - that was the one featured in Bridges of Madison County. Be prepared to get your car dirty though because most of the bridges you have to drive on graveled dirt roads. The roads are very good but the dust is awful. I had to get my car detailed when I got back from this vacation due to all the dust I took back with me from Iowa. But a really enjoyed going to all the bridges.

The Holliwell Covered Bridge, built in 1880 by Harvey P. Jones and George K. Foster, is the longest covered bridge in Iowa, spanning the Middle River. This picturesque bridge, featured in the film "The Bridges of Madison County," was restored in 1995 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It is absolutely charming and has historical significance, making it a must-see landmark in Madison County.

The better parking are is on the side closest to Winterset. You can park on either but can only get down to the water from the city side, also it's a bit shorter from the more main road to parking on that side. The trees on one end give it a romantic feeling, but for a full view the city side is nicer. I don't know about route, but apparently also a place to put in if you are going tubing, canoeing or kayaking.

This bridge was just rebuilt using all new materials. That disappointed me a little but it proved that the old designs can still be used. It had just been reopened 2 weeks before I visited and already had a dozen graffiti items. There were bathrooms at the site if you were brave enough or had to go bad enough. While this review sounds negative, I truly enjoyed walking through it and examining the construction methods used. It was a look back to a simpler and more picturesque time when bridges like this were common place. It brought a sense of...
