Hogback Ridge Bridge is another great stop on the Madison County covered bridge trail. The setting is peaceful and scenic, and the bridge itself has that classic, historic charm you’d expect. One unique thing about this one, you can’t drive through the bridge, but you can drive around to the other side, which is perfect if you want to see it from every angle without backtracking. We visited on a quiet day and had the whole place to ourselves. It’s a great photo spot and a nice little piece of Iowa history tucked into the countryside. Definitely worth checking out if you’re exploring the area!

I have always wanted to see the Bridges of Madison County. I adore Iowa, but I have never been able to make it here until now, which is shocking since I have been so close so many times. I only got to visit the Hogback Bridge, but it was instant love. It feels like walking into a time warp. You can tell the bridge is well loved by the community and taken care of. It is a point of pride for them as it should be. I could sit by this bridge for hours just listening to the sound and enjoying the view. If you love nature, history, or classic movies, this is a must.

This is the first accessible Bridge of the Bridges of Madison County. This one is accessed on the highway between Winterset Iowa and Desoto Iowa. Set in the country with scenic views a close drive to Winterset Iowa where John Wayne’s Birthplace is , Cold Turkey was shot as well as The Bridges of Madison County. The county had 7 Covered bridges when I lived there but they have been attacked by arsonists over the years. I believe there are 6 now. Check out Winterset City Park where another covered bridge was moved to.
