saddest site of this continent i have ever visited, these people were truly "mazlum" as they say in Arabic. For me it was a pilgrimage to make, specifically travelled on my bike to this site. Looks like the site is used for burial up until recent times. The fact that there is no guides/entrance/brochures and hardly any visitors adds to the significance of this site. Read the book Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. Also there were a couple of people trying to give a history lesson about the place then asking for "donations."

A must see with your own eyes. We visited in the off season and the silence was very humbling. We parked at the highway and walked up but you can drive all the way up and park. Please pay respects to the natives that still take care of the site. I was told to leave the gate open. Its free to visit but if you listen to the natives please make a donation or buy something from them, real history isnt written, its spoken.

I wanted to see Wounded Knee to pay my respects after reading so much about it. However the other reviews about people approaching and selling items were correct. We had a car full of locals drive up to us, get out and motion us to come over to their. Somewhat scary. If you go, just be careful and aware.

On our way for a few days in the Pine Ridge Reservation we made a stop to the Wounded Knee Historic site.

I have never experienced what I experienced before, and have never since. I do believe that when you enter a sacred land and pay honor and respect you will be able to "take in" the spirits of those that were left behind.

Before the visit, I knew nothing about this history, but I would like to think I did feel their spirits that day. I felt the wind but I also felt something else that it's difficult to deal with any words. All I can say, is during until the point where we exited the gates I felt a connection of sorts and it was one the most peaceful feeling I felt.

Afterwards we did stop into the building where they had photos of the atrocities that occured at Wounded Knee and I felt so sadden to learn of the history.

When we returned to the house we were staying at. A local Lakota women friend of my friend, we ended up watching a documentary about what occured at the very site in the more modern era. A standoff between parties...I was blown away by all this history I never knew about but grateful to have...

A place of great burden and sorrow for true human beings everywhere no matter the hue of skin or ethnicity. What took place here at the end of 1890 was inevitable, though the way it all came down was incontrovertibly avoidable. Should you ever visit here then my suggestion is to walk softly along these grounds, keep your mouths closed, and listen. Perhaps whispers of Grandfathers may come to your heart and speak words without words to help you feel the depth of grief still present here. It's powerful, living, breathing. Walk in peace, and know we are all...
