On our way for a few days in the Pine Ridge Reservation we made a stop to the Wounded Knee Historic site.
I have never experienced what I experienced before, and have never since. I do believe that when you enter a sacred land and pay honor and respect you will be able to "take in" the spirits of those that were left behind.
Before the visit, I knew nothing about this history, but I would like to think I did feel their spirits that day. I felt the wind but I also felt something else that it's difficult to deal with any words. All I can say, is during until the point where we exited the gates I felt a connection of sorts and it was one the most peaceful feeling I felt.
Afterwards we did stop into the building where they had photos of the atrocities that occured at Wounded Knee and I felt so sadden to learn of the history.
When we returned to the house we were staying at. A local Lakota women friend of my friend, we ended up watching a documentary about what occured at the very site in the more modern era. A standoff between parties...I was blown away by all this history I never knew about but grateful to have...

What took place here at the end of 1890 was inevitable, though the way it all came down was incontrovertibly avoidable. Should you ever visit here then my suggestion is to walk softly along these grounds, keep your mouths closed, and listen. For me it was a pilgrimage to make, specifically travelled on my bike to this site. Looks like the site is used for burial up until recent times.
