Cement Ridge is located on the Bearlodge Ranger District of the Black Hills National Forest, Crook County, Wyoming, one mile west of the South Dakota state line. Cement Ridge is a rocky montane meadow supporting primarily native plant species. Due to the vantage point from 6,647 feet, a fire lookout was placed on Cement Ridge in 1937-1938. (The tallest peak in the Black Hills is 7,242 feet). The Cement Ridge montane meadow sits on an igneous intrusion of the Crystalline Core, with rocky soil derived from igneous and metamorphic rock. Viewing Information: The Black Hills are known to be a convergence of "where East meets West". The Black Hills are also referred to as "an island in the plains". Looking out from this open high meadow, Rocky Mountain species such as ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) and aspen (Populus tremuloides) can be seen, along with the northern species paper birch (Betula papyrifera). Looking down, the meadow is mostly made up of grasses and forbs such as arrowleaf balsamroot (Balsamorhiza sagittata), which is at its easternmost distribution in the Black Hills; pasqueflower (Anemone patens) which is a relict of the last glaciation; shooting star (Dodecatheon pulchellum) a western representative, and larkspur (Delphinium bicolor), a northern species. The best wildflower viewing is when the Rocky Mountain forbs are blooming in late June/early July. Beautiful views can be seen any time, weather permitting. source -fs.usda.gov#cementridge #beulah

This place is always a good view, even though you cannot go to the top deck. It is locked at the top of the stairs. This location always shows off the best of Autumn colors, in every direction. You can drive right to the top and park, use the vault style bathrooms, sit at the numerous picnic tables that are scattered around. There is a small room at ground level in the tower. It appears to have been a garage back in the day, but it has since become just a small place to eat lunch, get out of the weather, etc. There is some knowledge hung on the walls as well, to read about the area.

Tons of area to roam up here. Accessible by all forms of transportation. There is lots of recent storm damage. You can't go wrong if needing to...

I've been wanting to ride up to the Cement Ridge Lookout for the last 3 yrs. I finally got it done on 06/27/24 on an Adventure bike. All but the last 1/4 mile was very doable. That last 1/4 mile was filled with medium sized rocks and holes. The road was dry but would be challenging if it was raining or the road was muddy. I wouldn't drive that in my Chevy Equinox. Only a truck or high clearance 4x4. Once there, the 360° view was absolutely spectacular. Well worth the trip up there. The Forest Service employee, who was on duty in the fire watch tower, took time to answer...

Rough road to the top of the world! When you get near the end of the road, the trees thin out and the views are spectacular. In mid-June, when I was there, the wild flowers were in full bloom...a veritable carpet of color! Your cannot climb the tower, but there is parking and a pit toilet and great views. Totally worth the drive. I would recommend an all-wheel-drive vehicle (mostly for clearance in some stretches of the road) and don't recommend trailers or campers. Also, watch the weather and bail if it turns...
