writing to formally document deceptive business practices at [Howard Family Farm] located at [250 Crater Rd, Harmony, NC]. The establishment operates with intentionally misleading policies regarding entrance fees and visitor charges.
There is no clear signage indicating that entering the pathway will incur a charge of $8 per person. This lack of transparency feels deceptive. Upon parking, visitors see tulips along the sides, but there are no visible signs or tokens provided. As you walk through, the flowers appear similar on both sides, and only if you happen to enter a hallway might you notice a board tucked in a corner stating the $8/person charge. This setup lacks clear instructions, especially regarding the per-person fee for walking around or cutting tulips.
The owner deliberately avoids placing clear signs or providing tokens at the entrance of the farm. There is no staff to distribute tickets before entry. Instead, visitors are charged only at the end when paying for the flowers. At this point, the owner insists on charging per person who entered the farm, issuing tickets retroactively. This process includes counting individuals in the car, even if some, such as elderly passengers, never stepped out. This approach feels coercive and unfair.
I am gathering signatures to report this incident to the county that issued the owner’s license. Additionally, the owner has displayed discriminatory behavior, accusing Indians of cheating by not paying. However, the real issue lies in the lack of a proper process, such as an upfront token system at the entrance, which would prevent misunderstandings and ensure fairness for...
Read moreToday, I visited Howard’s Family Farm with my family, excited to enjoy the tulip fields. Unfortunately, what should have been a beautiful family outing turned into a deeply upsetting experience.
While we were at the checkout, we witnessed the owner of the farm make a blatantly racist and hurtful generalization about the Indian community. In response to another customer questioning ticket prices, the owner loudly stated that “only Indians try to cheat him” and continued to reinforce this harmful stereotype, even after we calmly explained how offensive and unfair it was.
As an Indian-American, I was shocked and hurt to be reduced to a stereotype, especially when my family and I were respectful and ready to pay. When I tried to express how painful and damaging his words were, I was told, “It’s okay if you don’t want to come here anymore.”
It’s incredibly disappointing to be treated this way, especially in a place meant for families and joy. No one should have to experience this kind of prejudice, and it’s deeply concerning that such behavior is tolerated — let alone expressed openly — by a business owner.
I hope this message serves as an opportunity for reflection, because such language not only alienates your customers but also causes real emotional harm. I sincerely hope no one else has to go through what...
