My wife and I hiked the Panorama Loop Trail from the Black Rock Canyon trailhead near the entrance of the Black Rock Canyon campground. There was plenty of room in the small parking area for our car. We left around 7:00AM and enjoyed fairly comfortable temperatures along the way. The first mile or so is washed out sand. The entire trail is uphill to the midpoint. The signage is great. It is always clear which trail you're on. We saw numerous chipmunks, lizards, rabbits, squirrels, and birds along the way, including a couple of roadrunners. We did but see any snakes. Joshua Trees dot the landscape throughout. At the split between the Panorama Loop and the Warren Peak trails, we took the left fork, hiking the Panorama Loop clockwise. The trail was wide enough for two people most of the time, but narrows in steeper sections including the switchbacks near the top of the ridge. The views along the way and from the top are beautiful. Did I mention that it's uphill all the way to the top? It's uphill all the way! The trip back to the start is downhill all the way, making the return far easier. We had seen several reviews which said the counterclockwise direction was harder to navigate, but we noted signage which would have made it just as easy to find our way as it was going clockwise. We would highly recommend hiking this trail early in the morning rather than waiting till the sun is high in the sky. There is not enough shade to find respite from the heat. This trail is strenuous and should not be attempted by those who are not physically fit for climbing or for dealing with the heat. Bring lots of water. Electrolyte drinks might be even better if it's especially hot. On the day we hiked, there were some bees along the trail wherever there were purple-flowered bushes. Pesky gnats also buzzed our faces from time to time. Bug spray might be a good option. We forgot ours...
Read moreReached the trailhead at 3:45pm on a Sunday in February. Easy to find parking. Did the "Warren Peak via Black Rock Trail and Panorama Loop" hike from allTrails. It came to 8 miles total with 1800 feet elevation gain and took me around 2h40m. I did the Panorama Loop counter clockwise and got to Warren Peak just 5 minutes before sunset. Definitely recommend it as a good sunset spot and also that you should carry a headlamp for getting back to the car from there in the dark. Trail is easy to follow. For Warren Peak, you need to climb 500 feet straight up in 0.7 miles, and even the high point of Panorama Loop is a decent climb to get to, so please carry plenty of water if attempting this in hot weather. Great views from...
Read moreBeautiful views, easy to moderate to hard trails as there are many connections with a detailed map at the beginning. The parking lot is before the camp grounds, just a strip along the road. The initial trail is with deep sand. I took my 60+ year old parent who is in moderate shape and walked about 1.5 miles. With the initial map and signs it's easy to plan a hike. No...
