This trail actually goes in to Joshua Tree National Park, as evidenced by the small National Parks Service sign along the trail. Payment is not required to use this trail, so you can see some Joshua Trees and save some money. The trail is great, with beautiful panoramic views of the mountains and lots of nice trees and scenery. There is a podium at the top of a peak that has a sort of guestbook you can sign, but unfortunately people think it's funny to draw inappropriate things like in elementary school. Otherwise though it's an awesome trail and well worth it.
Reception and GPS directions work fine, it will take up you towards a campground. Don't be deterred by the signs to register for camping, that isn't necessary if you are just hiking. Just follow the road the GPS tells you...
Read moreFirst off, this a great hike. The trail is beautiful and and not too steep. I believe the loop is around 1.3 miles. The views are great as well, you can see the whole valley. The road on the way goes up into the hills for a few miles so that’s why the hike is easy and the views are vast. For other readers, don’t worry about the GPS, it’s dead on accurate. There is a quarter mile dirt road however, but my Honda Accord made it with ease, no huge rocks or anything. There was a large family there when we were who had special dietary needs, including vegetarian, and they were able to accommodate their requests. There was also another large party dining on the patio, so outside dining is available. It is right off the main street and close to the pier.
