This museum is situated in a large enchanted park with a subterranean labyrinth, romantic little ruins and all sorts of trees, mulberry, araukaria, palmtrees etc. The perfect location for children! The theme of the museum is the military dictatorship in the seventies and the imprisonment of many leftist intellectuals and democrats during that time. Like in Guatemala, soldiers abducted and killed suspected Pocitos persons at night - in Guatemala tens of thousands, in Uruguay about 150 "Disaparecidos" (I hope my memory is right, if not, please correct). In Montevideo women are still showing their enlarged photographs in street demonstrations. In the cinemas of Montevideo you can see "Una noche de 12 anos" about the conditions of living in jail for the socialist guerrillas Tupamaros, among them Jose Mujica who later became the much beloved President of Uruguay. Read moreAn important museum of the sad history from Uruguay and other countries within South America. This museum is very informative and is a must for everyone to be educated on what has happened and hopefully will never happen again.

There is a broken archway and an abandoned building that is out of bound. Except for this the garden is really nice. There is a little pink castle and a grotto.
The staff are really friendly and are ready to help and answer any questions. Free to enter. The museum is a bit far away from other tourist spots, but I am glad...
Read moreAs a Uruguayan it was a debt to go there, to refresh the memory about a grey and sad moment of the country, the military dictatorship period. However, and although the topic of the museum involves a terrorist moment of the country full of violence, torture, assassination and sadness, the tour throughout all the rooms convey stregth to fight or keep fighting against human rights violations. It is composed of different moments, the ressisstance, the coup, the disappearances of people and tortures. It worth seeing it! Set in an old neo classic style house with a history itself, enigmatic, and surrounded by an amazing french style garden in the middle of the City, that makes you forget about it, like being in...
