El Fuerte de Santa Rosa de La Eminencia, también conocido como el castillo de Santa Rosa, se encuentra en La Asunción. Fue construido en el siglo XVII luego del ataque de piratas al mando del marqués de Maineton, quienes en enero de 1677 saquearon La Asunción. Fue construido en una ubicación estratégica, en un cerro de la ciudad, desde donde es posible observar la costa del este, el camino de Pampatar a La Asunción, el valle de Atamo, los cerros circundantes y las faldas de los cerros Guayamurí y Matasiete. La construcción, realizada por el el Maestre de Campo Don Juan Fermín Huidobro quien era gobernador y capitán general de la isla, fue iniciada el 24 de septiembre de 1677 y se terminó en 1682. Durante todo el periodo colonial hubo ataques de piratas y corsarios, entonces los pobladores de la ciudad se refugiaban en el castillo y defendían La Asunción con los cañones.
