In January 2023, my family embarked on a remarkable journey to Halong Bay, Vietnam. With a group of six, including myself, we eagerly set off to explore one of nature's most astonishing creations - the Surprise Cave.
As we approached the bay, the sight of thousands of limestone karsts rising majestically from the emerald waters left us in awe. It was a surreal experience, and we couldn't wait to explore the renowned Surprise Cave, also known as "Hang Sửng Sốt" in Vietnamese.
Upon entering the cave, a cool breeze welcomed us, providing relief from the warm Vietnamese climate. The cave's interior was a wonder to behold. Stalactites and stalagmites gracefully adorned the cavern, forming intricate shapes that seemed almost otherworldly. Our guide shared intriguing stories and legends associated with the cave, adding an extra layer of enchantment to our journey.
As we ventured deeper into the cave's chambers, the grandeur of Surprise Cave continued to unfold. The first chamber, known as the "Bottle Chamber," featured colossal stalactites resembling wine bottles, some reaching lengths of over 20 meters. It was a mesmerizing sight, and we couldn't help but marvel at the intricacies of nature's artistry.
The second chamber, known as the "Opera House Chamber," was equally impressive. Stalactites and stalagmites formed shapes resembling an opera stage, complete with curtains and grand balconies. The play of light within the chamber added an ethereal quality to the scene, making it feel like we were inside a magical theater.
Our journey through Surprise Cave concluded with the "Surprising Chamber," the largest and most awe-inspiring of them all. As we stood there, surrounded by towering limestone formations, it was easy to see why this cave had earned its name. The chamber's sheer size and the intricate formations left us speechless.
Leaving the cave, we couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for having witnessed such natural beauty. The Surprise Cave in Halong Bay had truly lived up to its reputation, offering an unforgettable experience for my family and me. It was a testament to the incredible wonders that nature can create, and a memory we will...

Vietnam has many attributes of history within it. To name a few, it has ancient culture, a history of warfare and military activities, geographical and topographical variety and the UNESCO world heritage wonder – the Halong Bay, with a unique feature of numerous limestone karsts emerging from the sea bed appearing like, what the legend has, the dragon’s teeth. Tourists have to take a cruise boat to sail through the karst infested lake of sea water. These karsts big as well as small are also called islands. It is on one such island named Bo Hon that the Cave of Surprises is located. This was discovered by a French man in 1901 (the French have a deep rooted connection with the Vietnamese. But that’s another story) and opened to tourism some 92 years later on.
The Hang Sung Sot is another limestone cave that the geology masters call ‘solutional cave’. This cave presents a wonderful photo opportunity to the tourists. The beauty of the cave is the formation by calcium deposits of stalactites and stalagmites. And when these formations meet from floor to roof they present an ornamental design of natural pillars and walls. The colour lighting gives the inside of the cave a magical appearance. The stalactites are icicle like strands / structures hanging from the roof of a cave. These structures are calcium salts deposited by dripping water. The stalagmites are the structures of the same chemical composition rising from the bed of a cave. Currently, no water was visible dripping from anywhere in the cave except for a small pool of accumulated crystal clear water just inside of the entrance with the stalactites hanging like a curtain in a semi circular formation. Atleast three parts of the cave are widely spacious with the roof heights equal to a three storey building at the highest point. The last part of the cave near the exit is hugely spacious. I took a one night two day cruise with a luxury liner and enjoyed the UNESCO world heritage site Halong Bay including this cave of surprises called Grotto des Surprises by the French explorer who found the...
Read more⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mesmerizing Experience at Sung Sot Cave - Ha Long Bay
We visited Sung Sot Cave on Sunday, January 12, 2015, as part of our full-day cruise through the stunning Ha Long Bay. The cave exploration was one of the highlights of the day, and it truly lives up to its name—"Surprise Cave"—with its breathtaking formations and sheer size.
What to Expect: The cave has two chambers, each more impressive than the last. The first chamber is spacious, with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, but don’t get too caught up taking photos here. The second chamber is where the real magic unfolds—a vast, illuminated cavern that feels like stepping into another world.
Our guide was fantastic, pointing out natural formations, including a turtle-shaped stone that locals consider auspicious. Many visitors touch it for good luck. We also spotted formations resembling animals and historical symbols. Staying close to the guide definitely made the experience richer.
Crowd & Accessibility: Since we visited on a Sunday, it was quite crowded, making it a bit challenging to enjoy the tranquility of the cave. However, despite traveling with a kid and a 2-year-old, the walk was manageable, though there are many steps involved, so plan accordingly.
Photo Opportunities: Here’s a cool tip—there’s a designated photo spot inside the cave where the management takes your picture. At the exit gate, you'll receive free keychains with your photo, and you can also purchase a larger print if you'd like.
Final Thoughts: While the cave itself is awe-inspiring, the experience can be rushed due to limited time on the cruise. We recommend visiting on a weekday to avoid the crowds and truly soak in the beauty. Wear comfortable shoes, keep your camera ready, and don’t miss the second chamber—it’s the real showstopper!
Would I recommend it? Absolutely! It’s a must-see when exploring Ha Long Bay.
