Travellers beware- Trang An is beautiful but over-tourism and the attitude of travellers ruins the experience of visiting a natural wonder. Wasn’t worth it for us.
We attended in low season, so there were a lot fewer people. Unfortunately, being one of the most popular destinations in Vietnam and UNESCO heritage listed means it still suffers from the effects of mass tourism.
We went in the little boat with two other young travellers we didn’t know, who spent the entire time making stories of themselves for social media with loud music, sometimes with us in the videos behind them which we weren’t comfortable with. Literally making around 50 stories. They did not look up to enjoy the site at all, and spent the whole time on their phones. When we looked around, most other people were doing the exact same thing. When we arrived at “photogenic” spots, it was a mass of boats with women posing for photos, some with professional photographers. It also meant that it was loud with people. Our guide was a Vietnamese speaker who didn’t speak English, which wasn’t a problem for us. But when we tried to engage with her and ask her questions about the site with Google translate, she basically fobbed us off and told us to take photos. She spent the time speaking with the other couple, and it seemed like she was offering information about the area but we couldn’t translate it quick enough to get the full experience. We didn’t expect the world from the guide as we know their work is hard and they are not paid a lot, but maybe the site should invest in audio guides so foreign visitors can appreciate this beautiful Vietnamese site. It ironic that the pamphlets they give you say you will be guided through the experience, as this is not true. The most we got was the guide hitting me in the back to say ‘temple’, which felt intrusive.
The worst part however was the attitude of the other couple in the boat, and of all the people around us constantly taking selfies. To have someone live streaming on their phone with music from social media (even though loud music is not allowed), was incredibly irritating. It totally took away from the experience. If you’re used to admiring unspoiled nature, there are better places you can go in Vietnam, where you can appreciate nature through the eyes of locals; we did a trek in Cat Ba with an awesome Vietnamese guide, who actually warned us about selfie culture and how it ruined these experiences. This experience wasn’t personally for us, but others may not be bothered by it.
Also, from a comfort perspective, you are sitting in a dingy for 3 hours on a wooden bench- if you have any back issues, make sure to take a cushion as...

I was completely in love with the place and the journey. ⚠️ Practical Tips for Visitors Weather: Try to avoid the peak heat of the day. The sun is burning hot, and the exposure during the 2.5-hour ride can be intense. Hydration & Refreshments: Bring plenty of water and fresh snacks to keep refreshed and comfortable throughout the long journey. Solo Travelers: Be aware that the boats typically require four people to depart. If you are a solo traveler, you may have to wait for others to fill the spots, and it can sometimes take a long time and try to avoid...
