As others have mentioned, a tip is expected. When my boat ride was ending, my boat lady said, "Tip," and would not row to the dock until I gave her cash. It was so distasteful.
The only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1, is because the Van Long wetland itself is beautiful... but the scenery is similar to Trang An. I'd say Trang An is more beautiful and is better value. Van Long is 200k for a 1 hr boat ride, 1 unimpressive cave that you briefly enter, no stops, you just sit in the boat and observe the wildlife, and you have to drive further from town to reach it. Trang An is 250k for a 3 hour boat ride, multiple caves and temples to stop at, and it's closer to town.
If you want a boat tour with wildlife, go to Thung Nam Bird Reserve instead. It's 150k, closer to town, and there's A LOT more birds (if you hike there, you'll see other wildlife). If you want to see monkeys at Van Long, make sure to come on a warm day... I didnt see any.
Van Long also has a busy road next to it. You boat along this road at the beginning and end of the trip... and you hear all the noise associated with that. For Trang An and Thung Nam, go on a weekday in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds.
I was never asked for a tip at Trang An and Thung Nam. The boat drivers were so friendly and helpful with photos, that I happily gave them a tip. At Van Long, the lady wasnt friendly or helpful, but still demanded a tip. But I guess it depends on...
Read moreIf you are looking for a truly peaceful and authentic experience in Ninh Binh, look no further than the Van Long Nature Reserve boat tour. This trip was an absolute highlight of our journey! The Van Long wetland, often called the "Ha Long Bay on Land" offers an escape from the crowds. The entire experience was incredibly nice and calm. The silence was only broken by the gentle sound of the paddle moving through the water, allowing us to fully soak in the tranquility of this vast wetland. The views are simply outstanding. The majestic limestone karst mountains rise dramatically from the clear water, creating mirror-like reflections that are breathtakingly beautiful. Drifting through the reeds and under the cliffs felt like entering a secluded paradise. We even passed through a cave, which added a sense of adventure to the serene setting. A special mention must go to the very kind woman who drove our boat. Her friendly demeanor and careful rowing made the journey feel personal and comfortable. It's clear that the local people running these tours take pride in preserving this beautiful environment. This is a must-do trip for anyone seeking stunning natural landscapes combined with complete serenity. Highly recommended for a quiet, visually spectacular morning...
Read moreI got the trip to explore the Van Long nature reserve in April 8. Few tips for the next customers: it is far from Ninh Binh city around 15km. I lost 40 minutes for driving. ( i drive slow). price ticket. 80.000 vnd/1 person if you travel alone. 50.000/ person if your group has more 2 people. the best time to see is morning (around 7:00-8:00) and afternoon (16:00-17:00 p.m). These time, you can see the special langur in tue Red list. But i was late so couldn't see any langur. But the afternoon is the best time to hunt sunset :) the wind nature on the wetland make you feel interesting and relaxing. The driver of bamboo shared me few information. Here was the main King Kong film set with Tràng An. -there are 2 routes. First route to see the cave and the second route to see the langur. I recommend for 2nd. Cause it is longer and more interesting. :) you maybe disappointed if just see the cave in dry season. the route 1 will be more amazing if you visit in rain season in July- August. The water level will higher and you can explore the beautiful cave. tip for driver who help you row boat. :) have a good camera to take the most pictures with your ability
