According to local information sources Minh Dam Pagoda has an interesting history. The original Pagoda complex was completely destroyed in a ferocious firefight between the Viet Cong and American forces in 1970. The geographical terrain surrounding the pagoda is a terrain of jumbled granite boulders. Apparently the Viet Cong forces used the natural caverns and tunnels, formed by the lay of the boulders to shelter from bombing raids and artillery fire. The battle, apparently, ended in a stalemate with the Americans unable to wheedle the VC out of their naturally formed bunkers. In the aftermath of the war, and the cessation of hostilities, American money paid for the rebuilding of the pagoda. The new pagoda, and nearby battle site, are a few minutes’ walk up a small track leading away from the nearby car park. The new pagoda is quite resplendent with its beautifully polished, heavy timber columns. It also seems to be one which doesn’t attract much attention from visitors; on the afternoon I visited, there was no one else there. The battle ground and its attached war museum are a couple of minutes’ walk further on from the Pagoda. Nearby the small museum, the foundations of the old pagoda can still be seen in amongst the encroaching jungle. The jumbled granite boulders surrounding the foundations are riddled with holes from rounds of varying calibre sizes. One large, upright boulder to the side of the approach trail was pockmarked with depressions from bullet and shrapnel impacts. The small museum, directly in front of the old pagoda foundations, has a collection of ordinance from the battle and some old black and white photos of the day. Further on the track continues to the peak above where there’s another historical site; a VC fort/encampment at the top. The round trip takes approximately 2 – 3 hours and a morning departure is recommended to beat the...
