Beautiful cave, we did a great 2 day 1 night tour with Greenland tour agency. We hand Rangur as an experienced Guide.
The only issues were the pollution and plastic everywhere. The water was filled with it, It was really unfortunate to see such a pristine cave littered with so much plastic. Considering it's only been open since 2017.
A lot is washed in with the river and flooding but there is also a lot left behind by the tours.
Our group was quite proactive we got the young porter from the village involved too and had a competition who could fill their pockets with the most plastic. We had to stop fairly quickly due to the sheer amount of plastic we picked up in the water. But regardless, the cave truly was beautiful.
The cave itself is vast and beautiful, we climbed as high as 300m on the 2nd day and then climbed back down. It is a lot of work if you are inexperienced in caving or climbing.
It has its own unique insects and wildlife. We were lucky enough to see a horned pit viper, a few spiders, a lot of bats and even more bugs. We even tasted a few accidentally with our flashlights attracting so many haha.
It was a highlight of the Phong Nha trip. Would be great if the tours cared a bit more about the environment and village they use to gain access to the cave, and their porter staff as well.
We caught a bus to the village to begin our 2d1n journey and all the rubbish and bottles our bus had consumed was collected then the driver just dumped it all on the roadside outside the village.
But the quick pity tour we had to do through the village beforehand was rather sad. Our guide made quite the emphasis on the poverty and lack of education of the villagers. The lack of desire to achieve more and how the were content with so little.
We were also unfortunate enough to witness some animal abuse to puppies but had to ignore it and continue on with the hike. Was a bit sad but we were told that it was common for this village to consume the dogs and it was apart of their regular diet. Our guide also said it was something he eats.
Our porter was from the village and was only 15 with his dad, and burdened with carrying the whole tours lifejackets, helmets, clothes and supplies for several kms whilst the tour guide held nothing. Luckily we offered to assist him and helped carry our shares.
Our guide was often much farther ahead of the group so it was hard to feel guided at times.
Fortunately the young porter Quan would hang behind us and assist us with learning how to climb, when to clip our carabineers on and where to step whilst climbing. None of us had ever been caving before or climbing so knowing these things certainly saved our lives at times. Also he saved us from putting our hands on a horned pit viper whilst climbing down from the peak.
At times our guide would often rush ahead and go spear fishing in the river and was upset we disturbed the fish or spoke too much.
We all joked on the last day at he final meal after completing he cave that our guide may have tried to trick us into eating dog we think, as the meat definitely didn't look normal and was brought to us by the village porter. with a lot of laughter and smirking and talking in vietnamese. We asked what was funny and he could only say the rice was making him laugh and how were eating it. He seemed upset we chose not to eat his meat but he barely touched it. Fortunately the tour group all passed up on the meat he brought. We really hope it was the pork/chicken he called it.
Hopefully this was all a miscommunication and incorrect train of thought from the group as it would be quite upsetting if someone would actually do that, hopefully it was just their sense of humour.
Hopefully also if less people are happy about plastic and pollution Greenland may see a dip in profits and actually get up and act.
Until then try and collect some plastic here and there to make the cave experience memorable for the right reasons.
Not tying to get anyone in trouble with this review. But as he said, "Real men should be silent" is...
Read more🇬🇧 We had this adventure with Greenland Tour. They pick you up early morning and in about 1hr you start. First across the jungle and rivers, then climbing into the cave. 🏞 After the lunch (quite cool 😋) you go deep in the cave illuminated only by the torchlight in your helmet. I won't spolier more 😁. The guide (Bot) was really cool and explained a lot of the nature, and history of the place, talking good English as well. He is a fun guy and you feel that he loves what is he doing.
Just for information: it's not for everyone, you have not to fear high (dizziness), you can encounter some wild animals 🕷🕸 and the rock can be sharp. I mean, you can made it without problems, but a false step ⚠️ (especially inside the cave) can put you in really danger, keep that in mind. Guide helps you a lot, anyway 👍
The best experience in Vietnam overall 😎
