Angkorajaborey Pagoda — Attraction in Trà Vinh City

To start with, Google Maps will direct you to the nearby pond and not to the actual entrance to the pagoda. To reach the pagoda take the small road off Nguyen Du which will lead you to the entrance. Just inside the entrance there is a free parking lot for motorbikes with a security guard on duty. Cars and other vehicles will need to park just outside on the small road. The pagoda is in the style and design of the Theravada branch of Buddhism and is quite large containing its own large pond that nearly surrounds the complex. As like most other temples in this style, all the buildings both inside and out are elaborately and intricately decorated, containing many beautiful, colourful statues and prayer altars. Currently, there is construction in progress on the newest main hall and the Naga pond (just inside the entrance) is empty. These factors slightly diminish the enjoyment of any visit. Also, the local touts (especially those selling lottery tickets) are quite persistent and pester visitors, with one following me around for awhile. The complex has a special area to receive blessings (near the Naga Pond) but no cameras are allowed. I found it very peaceful to walk around the outside section of the large pond, as most visitors stay within the central areas. I walked through the motorbike parking section and went clockwise around the entire pond and exited near the Naga Pond. Walking around the pond you will see 7 colourful and quite lovely altars. Chùa Âng in Trà Vinh is a beautiful Khmer Buddhist temple with incredible attention to detail. You can tell a lot of care went into its design and upkeep. I’d recommend spending at least an hour or two walking the grounds and taking in the intricate artwork and peaceful atmosphere.

One of my favorite parts was walking around the lake. It was calm, quiet, and gave us a chance to slow down and take everything in. There’s also an opportunity to make a donation and receive a blessing, which added a meaningful touch to the visit.

Just a heads-up, there is an area where trash is collected, and it’s not the cleanest. But it doesn’t take away from the overall experience. I’d suggest bringing water, sunscreen, and a hat so you can take your time and really enjoy everything without feeling rushed.

Chùa Âng (tên Khmer là Angkorajaborey) là một ngôi chùa cổ trong hệ thống chùa Khmer của tỉnh Trà Vinh. Hiện tọa lạc bên Quốc lộ 53 thuộc khóm 4, phường 8, thành phố Trà Vinh, tỉnh Trà Vinh, Việt Nam. Đây là một trong những ngôi chùa tiêu biểu trong hệ thống 141 ngôi chùa Khmer ở Trà Vinh. Theo Bảng Di tích lịch sử chùa Âng, thì chùa có từ năm 990... Đến năm 1695, ngôi chính điện được xây dựng lại bằng lá tre. Năm 1842, chùa được xây dựng lại bằng gỗ quý (rui, mè và 60 cây cột), lợp ngói và tường xây. Sau đó, chùa còn được trùng tu vài lần nữa. Chùa nằm cách trung tâm thành phố Trà Vinh khoảng 5 km, nằm trong khuôn viên thắng cảnh Ao Bà Om, và đối diện với Bảo tàng Văn hóa dân tộc Khmer của tỉnh. Chùa nằm trong khuôn viên có diện tích khoảng 4 ha, có hào nước sâu bao bọc, và được xây dựng theo lối kiến trúc trang trí chùa Khmer Nam Bộ. Cổng chùa được xây dựng với ba ngọn tháp ở trên, có đắp hình chằn. Hai bên trụ cổng là hình vũ nữ Kẽn naarr và tượng người đầu chim (Krũd). Chính điện chùa Âng (chính diện) Chánh điện quay về hướng Đông, tọa lạc nên một nền cao 2 m. Mái của chính điện được cấu tạo gồm ba cấp, hai mái trên cùng thì dốc và cao hơn mái còn lại. Các gò mái có thần rắn Naga, đuôi cong vút, tượng trưng cho sự dũng mãnh vĩnh cửu. Ở các đầu cột là những tượng vũ nữ Kẽn naarr và tượng người đầu chim (Krũd) với hai tay chống đỡ mái. Quanh chính điện có trụ cột, hàng rào với đầu thần Bayon bốn mặt. Ngoài ra ở đây còn có tượng chằn Yeak mặc áo giáp với khuôn mặt dữ dằn….
