The place is far more ‘rustic’ than the photos suggest, half the appliances didnt work and its miles from nowhere. All that was annoying and made the place completely overpriced at $400/night, but none of that is the reason for the one star.
Heres the reason: the owner showed up during our stay and demanded $730 extra for having 3 kids at the house for 3 nights. Literally just the kids being present, no other reason.
At first there was no mention of money, just that she had been watching us and she had seen kids on the property (ages 3, 4 and 7). We had to contact the booking agent immediately and let them know they were with us. We had no idea why it was so important but we figured it was going to be about money. The amount was very vague, the reason was there were three extra beds to make and making kids beds wasnt covered under the $1200 we had already paid.
We showed her all the broken stuff (oven, toaster, washing machine) and we were offered $150 off to compensate - very reasonable. We offered to just hand over the difference to her in cash, thinking it couldn’t be much considering the $150 discount. At this point we really just wanted her gone. “No, must be done through the agent.” Weird but ok.
We were left thinking it would even out and we could continue on our weekend away without being harassed any further. I mean, its three little kids. Wrong!
Within 15 mins of the owner leaving the booking agent called and made the whole thing clear, there were some fees hidden in the terms and conditions we signed up to which entitled the owner to an extra $210 PER NIGHT if we bought our kids (exceeding the 4 person limit). So thats it, minus the $150 for the broken stuff there was $580 owing. Apparently the owner sets the fees and they don’t have to be fair.
This was easily the most negative experience i have ever had at a rental. I would never recommend Camphill Cottage to anyone, if theres a child fee in play, who knows what other hidden surprise fees are in those terms to ruin...
Read moreCamp Hill is simply a beautiful place to unload and relax. Janet, the host was friendly and offered us a wonderful insight to the highlights of the region as well as the history of Camp Hill. The home is gorgeous and rustic in equal measure, great for those with an appreciation for nature, farm life and history. Camp hill includes cosy beds, underfloor heating in the bathrooms, a fabulous eat in kitchen, and heritage stove in the lounge that we used for cooking our home made pizzas. Add to that an abu dance of bird life, rambling cottage gardens, and a huge tree for climbing (if you're agile) and this place is the...
Read moreHusband and I stayed in the cottage, not the main house. The breakfast provisions were very generous and there is a great espresso machine. The heated floor in the bathroom was invaluable as it was unexpectedly cold for November. However a few things bothered me. On arrival we soon became aware of a chirping sound and discovered a battery in one of the smoke alarms was the cause. We also found another smoke alarm with no battery at all. There was a lot of areas that looked like they hadn't been dusted for a while. A previous visitor had written dust me on the top of...
