My family and I stayed for 3 nights in the first week of July (the depths of winter) and we would thoroughly recommend Blackwood Cottage. The facilities in the house were above what we normally find in serviced apartment type accommodation, and some were better even than our own home. The wood-fired heating was very effective, both in warming the house and in creating atmosphere.
Barbara and Gary were very thoughtful hosts: they lit the fire before we arrived to warm the cottage; they advised us about Whalemail, which is a whale sighting newsletter for Portland; and provided many brochures on tourism in the area.
My only suggestion is that newcomers to Blackwood Cottage ensure that they arrive during daylight hours as it is difficult to find even in daylight.
One nice touch that I appreciated was the rainwater rather than town-water. The rainwater was lovely but the Portland town water almost tasted like the local swimming pool. If you are travelling to Portland, fill up your bottles at Blackwood Cottage before you leave.
Note that Blackwood Cottage seems to offer few opportunities to experience farm life (for example, there are no cute animals to cuddle or to handfeed), other than just walking along the country lanes.
Overall, we loved our stay and will definitely stay again if we are...
