The locals call this campsite "Mozzie Creek". The creek is stagnant, and there is no access to swimming locations or fresh water. The windy loos stink worse than anything I have ever experienced, and sites 10-14 are immediately next to the stench. When you book online, you are automatically assigned a campsite, but you can call up at any time and get it changed. If you are with Telstra, you might even be able to call NSW OEH from the campsite, if you don't like the spot you've been given (no Optus reception), and the staff are really friendly and accommodating.
However, we had a fantastic time. Firstly, the campsite was clean, other campers were considerate and experienced (no late nights or litter), and it wasn't too densely packed (NSWP&WS constructed mounds between each site, adding physical barriers between sites). We were able to move from site 12 (next to toilets) to site 24 (I think), which was GREAT. We ended up going for a swim, shower and sh-sh- toilet break at Del Rio resort (for $10 per person, I think), two ferry rides away. Firewood was easily gathered, the fire pits were easy to manage, and the public BBQ was adequate. Mosquito larvae ridden rainwater was great for washing dishes without impacting our own freshwater supply.
Protips: When booking, study the campsite map, and phone them up (even if you have booked online) to choose a spot furthest from the toilets. Bring your own fresh water Bring only a small amount of kindling and firewood: about a 1/4 bag of each per night. Logs and twigs...
Read moreMills creek camp ground has got a lot of mosquitoes so take some high strength repellent , the camp ground is not far down the road from the northern side of Wisemans Ferry punt crossing opposite the way to St Albans . Not much firewood around the camp-site so if you arrive late bring your own wood. Otherwise use bottled gas or something. The road in and out is good and unsealed and short. There are two walks one long and one short I'd stick to the shorter one the other is an 11 km loop. You have to pay online to book at 12 dollars per person per night at the time of writing , Rangers come and check in the mornings and will catch you out if you don't leave very early which some blow ins probably do. Water and drop toilets, and BBQ area and fire pits with chairs at some spots. It's not a bad place if you don't get idiots camping nearby I've always met nice people camping at Mills Creek. It gets a strong thumbs up but it's popular. If you can't log onto the NSW national parks and wildlife you get your car rego photographed and you have to pay for the site, no dogs allowed in any national parks even when driving through for a quick look it's a 300 dollar infringement. So you...
Read moreA quiet campground tucked away into the forest just off the Hawkesbury River. The campground has basic facilities such as non-flush toilets, bins for rubbish and recycling, electric bbq's and tanked rainwater. It is recommended you bring your own drinking water. There is plenty of parking. Each tent site has enough space for three large tents, and they are situated a good distance from other tent sites so that you are not bothered by the noise from your camping neighbours. Some of the tent sites have dedicated fire pits to use for campfires. Definitely recommend this campground in late autumn, early winter.
Word of caution, be wary of the pesky bush turkeys on the lookout for an easy cheeky snack of your camp food. They are bold and will snatch anything that is within reach and isn't being...
