My experience has been interesting here. We were a group of 4 and had booked wine tasting as well as a platter of accompaniments (cheeses, etc.) that we had to buy with it. For each, the wine tasting cost 10 bucks and the platter was 30 bucks (advertised for a group of 5). My feedback is long so bear with me here:-
Few observations:-
When we went inside the winery on a very hot Sunday, the first thing we noticed was how equally hot and humid it was inside too. We were ushered to the side of the wine bar where the four of us crammed in as we sat on stools. It was interesting, but not very comfortable in the heat. One explanation that was offered was that the winery was a eco friendly one and hence it was completely solar. The Tesla chargers outside were powered by Solar as well. No air conditioners though.
The owner is almost a martinet when it comes to Covid rules. This is good until it is taken to strange levels e.g. for wine tasting, you will have to gulp down the wine poured, if you like it or not. There were no spittoons and no palate cleansers for Covid reasons. For water (as a palette cleanser and to also help us out in the heat), we had to ask for it everytime. Again, interesting!
The owner is an enterprising person and he has some witty jokes up his sleeve but as the experience unfolded, we found he was also quite arrogant about his wines, his winery and the way he makes wines. For a few of the wines, he went on to say he had some of the best wines of the region. I have seen this in some lower hunter valley wine makers and haven’t given much notice to these things. However, in this case, his arrogance was reversely proportional to the wines - the ones he said were the best in the region and he is proud of, were the worst. This was where we were looking for the spittoons!
The worst part was the cheese platter. It was 30 bucks, and what we got was a chilli cheese and a camembert, with a box of crackers and a small jar of non-matured olives. We were expecting some meat, some fruits, and some freshness as well. What was served was probably worth 15 bucks if not more. I was happy to pay 15 or 30 bucks but I’d expect to get something worth the money!
Some of the wines we tasted were great. I bought a bottle of Sparkling Shiraz. I also requested for a box to take away the unfinished cheeses and crackers. But before I could finish packing the stuff in, he thrust the eftpos machine in front of me and waited to me to tap. No warning. Further more, the wine I bought was 25 bucks and I paid 31 bucks for it. I noticed it then but I didn’t mention it as I was taken aback a bit with his attitude.
Enough said, I think I am not going there again even though others may have had a better experience than me (per...
Read moreWhat a lovely experience I had at Solos Estate today! On my way back to Sydney, I made a stop at the estate to charge my Tesla at the supercharger and decided to explore the winery while I was there. We headed inside for a wine tasting, eager to discover what the estate had to offer, and we were not disappointed.
Raj, the owner who guided us through the tasting, truly made the experience memorable. From the moment we arrived, he provided exceptional customer service, making us feel welcomed and at ease. Raj’s passion for the wines was evident, and he took the time to educate us about the unique characteristics of each wine, including their origins, flavor profiles, and the winemaking process. It was fascinating to learn from someone who clearly has a deep appreciation for the craft.
Beyond the wines, Raj shared with us his personal story—how he came to be part of Solos Estate and his experiences in the industry. His warmth and genuine nature made the tasting feel more like a conversation with an old friend than a formal experience. It added a special touch to our visit, turning a simple wine tasting into a rich and engaging journey.
Of all the wines we sampled, the rosé stood out as a must-try. Its vibrant flavors and refreshing finish made it the perfect complement to a relaxed afternoon at the estate. I would highly recommend stopping by Solos Estate for a tasting if you find yourself in the area. It’s not just about the delicious wines but also the welcoming atmosphere and the people, like Raj, who make it such a...
